"Tell her you love her with a diamond."

"Diamonds are forever."

Oh screw off, they're pretty rocks!

It's TOTALLY fine if people love them for what they are...but most people love them for what they represent: lots of money. And while I have no problem with rich people, I DO loathe the mentality that having lots of money means anything more than...well...having lots of money!

I love your story, Wyatt. I think an heirloom ring is wonderful!

My most prized piece of jewellry along with my engagement ring is a necklace my parents gave me when I graduated University. It is a beautiful cameo that was originally in a ring and they had reset it for me to wear as a necklace. The ring was originally given to my great grandmother by my great grandfather who went to Italy to pick out the cameo. He gave it to her on their wedding day. I LOVE that cameo - it is beautiful but doubly precious because of its family connections. I have it in my will to go to my niece, (I have no children of my own) and I hope she will in turn bequeath or gift it to one of her daughters when she has one.

Yeah, just not a fan of excessive anything. I also think the 'demanding of' a ring or jewellery or whatever just makes a person look horribly petty. I like to just live and let live -- if you don't like what your spouse or whomever has to offer, you do not have to agree to stay or whatever.

Anyways... to each his/her own. OH and trailmix? Can I get that coffee to go if you don't mind? I gotta shove off to job #2 now...

have a good Saturday everyone and stay warm -- it's -15 here in Toronto today!

Yeep...

:)

LGG

Sure!

Actually I didn't get a wedding ring until we had been married for umm say 7 years?

What about Canadian diamonds :hehe:

Actually diamonds and the price of them - I have always found this kind of amusing. If they are so 'rare' why does everyone have one. Now i'm not saying a rock like the Hope diamond isn't rare, it probably is - but short of that -

Anyway, it's the way they are marketed - but I personally do like diamonds.

One of the only major stores that are guaranteed to sell Canadian diamonds is Tiffany's. The rest, you just don't know what you're getting.

FYI for anyone who wants to buy diamonds. :)

I belive the cdn diamonds have a polar bear engraved inside them, dont they?????????

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

One of the manufacturers of Canadian diamonds is called Polar Bear. Polar Bear diamonds have a small polar bear engraved on the diamond. Not all Canadian diamonds do, though, just the ones from this jeweller. All Canadian diamonds have a serial number though that is unique to each stone.

http://www.canadiandiamondcodeofconduct.ca...information.htm

also:

What To Look For

So don’t be fooled by images of majestic glaciers, vast icy landscapes or frolicking polar bears. The only way to be sure that the diamond you’re interested in is in fact Canadian is to see its Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) certification.

Diamonds that are mined, cut and polished in the Northwest Territories are given a serial number that is unique to that stone – no other diamond can be given the same number as another. That serial number tells you which Canadian mine the diamond came from. It is laser-inscribed on each stone’s girdle (the rim between the flatter top and the pointed bottom of the diamond) and is only visible through a microscope. A certificate showing the serial number, rough weight and cut weight accompanies each diamond.

Another useful tool is the Rare In Nature program. It was put into place to inform consumers and assist retailers in educating the public about Canadian diamonds and the GNWT certification program.

To be confident the diamond you’re buying is Canadian, you must look for both the laser-inscription on the diamond AND the GNWT certificate. Ask questions too. If the retailer knows where the diamond came from, about the GNWT certification program and the Rare In Nature program and can tell you about the Canadian diamond industry, you can be confident your diamond is conflict-free and 100% Canadian.

thats pretty much my mentality when it comes to jewelery. I didn't wanta diamond and when i look at them i just shrug. ya i knwo about cuts clarity etc etc but honestly? As shania twains says " it don't impress me much"

my engagement ring which i helped pick out is quite simple really. and was pretty darn cheap. we got it from zales who i thought would be expensive.

I didn't really care about an engagement ring either, but I did tell Chris if he was ever going to propose it better be with a diamond from my home. I grew up in the NWT. :P

And he did get a ring it was with a diamond from there for it. He said it was hard as heck to find a jeweler that didn't try to talk him into a different diamond. I guess they kept saying for the same amount of money you could get a diamond from elsewhere that's a lot clearer and bigger. I guess they figure its all about size too.

My MIL, who is all about $$$$, got remarried a couple years ago, and her engagement ring is this J-Lo looking 4 carat monster. She's petite with small hands, and it looks like her wrist is going to break some days. . . . . . . . Oh dear god that just reminded me that she's arriving in 3 days. :crying:

My engagement ring was a Christmas present in 2007 (9 months after we were married). It wasn't important for me to have one when we were engaged. I'm not one to wear a lot of jewellery. It's a simple round cut 1/2 carat that is perfect!

His ex when they were together told him that it had to be a $3000 ring. Not me. He picked it, and did wonderful because it was exactly what I would have picked if I were looking at rings.

He got kudos for that :D

That's so cool...I'd always wondered about the "North of 60" thing, but didn't know you were from NWT. I don't know why I find that so neat but I do... Maybe it's because you now live in Hawaii, which is such a different climate!

Engagement story!

I came to visit my fiancé the week of thanksgiving and told him I would arrive Tuesday if that week. I had worked all weekend but decided to pack up leave 1 day early! The look on his face was priceless when I showed up

at his door a day early! We were relaxing on the couch later and he got up went to the bedroom and came back with one of his model cars. He had put both the engagement and weddig ring in the trunk of the car, got down on one knee and opened the trunk of the car! LoL of course I said yes!

I was completely shocked at the ring, I was not expecting anything grand nor did I want it, I am a practical person and don't need a 3 carat ring. Thr diamond was a gift from his mother, it came from an anniversary ring his dad had bought for her. The diamond fell out of the mounting for her and she never got it remounted. His dad had very good taste and I was suprised with my husband's choice for setting but I love it!

My friends husband bought her a 2 carat ring only for HIS satisfaction, it was disgusting, he wanted her to have all the attention because of this ring and in turn make him look good! Of course when I saw it for tr first time it was an OMG moment. Her response was is it really that bad? Sooo sad it's all about the $$ for both of them...

Anyways my point is you can have a huge #### diamond on your hand but not be happy. The diamond on my ring sparkles more as a 3/4 carat than any larger more expensive diamond that has horrible clarity.

My fiance said the same thing ... that a lot of jewelers attempted to get him to buy a ring with a diamond from who-knows-where just so it could be bigger. My engagement ring diamond is from the NWT too :D It's from the Daivik mine. Personally, I like diamonds, but I did say to my fiance months before he proposed that I did not want diamond if I didn't know where it was from. He actually gave me the certificate of the diamond after he proposed, saying "See?! It's from Canada, too!"

I would have gladly accepted any ring from my fiance, regardless if it was a diamond ring or even a ring pop :) He chose it for me, and for that reason I love it.

I picked better clarity over a bigger diamond myself.

I dont need a huge thing on my finger. I think mine's 1/4 carat. I'm not totally sure, but it sometimes even seems too big to me.
