If I (u.s. citizen) were to marry a non-immigrant in another country, how long would we have to wait to start a visa process for a green card? I have heard it's about 6 months.

Our Timeline:

Fall 2008- Met as friends while studying abroad

Nov. 2008- Started dating

Feb. 2009- Moved in together in Senegal

Apr. 2009- Got engaged

Aug-Dec. 2009- Long distance relationship from CA to Senegal

Dec-Jan. 2010- Christmas and New Years together in Senegal

Feb-May. 2010- Long distance (last time ever, no matter what!)

May 15th, 2010- Graduated!

May 20th, 2010- Moved to Senegal to live together

July- Moved to the Ivory Coast

August 20t, 2010- Married (YAYYY!!)

October- Found out we are having our first child in April!

December 22nd- Moved back to California due to political tension in the Ivory Coast

April 22nd- Our son was born

USCIS

June 3rd- Mail I-130

June 7th- NOA1 email/text

June 9th- NOA1 letter

October 3rd, 2011- NOA2

NVC

October 31st- NVC Case Number Recieved

Oct 31st- DS-3032 Emailed

Nov 21st- AOS Paid

Dec 22nd- IV Fee Paid

Jan 6th- AOS Packet Received

Jan 10th- IV Packet Sent and "False RFE" received

Jan 11th- NVC operator said AOS Packet was approved

Jan 24th- CASE COMPLETE!

The USC can file the I-130 petition as soon as the marriage certificate is in their hands. And the other required documents. No waiting time.

03/27/2009: Engaged in Ithaca, New York.
08/17/2009: Wedding in Calcutta, India.
09/29/2009: I-130 NOA1
01/25/2010: I-130 NOA2
03/23/2010: Case completed.
05/12/2010: CR-1 interview at Mumbai, India.
05/20/2010: US Entry, Chicago.
03/01/2012: ROC NOA1.
03/26/2012: Biometrics completed.
12/07/2012: 10 year card production ordered.

09/25/2013: N-400 NOA1

10/16/2013: Biometrics completed

12/03/2013: Interview

12/20/2013: Oath ceremony

The process you start is for an immigrant visa. You're posting in the K3 forum but the K3 visa is virtually obsolete. What you most likely want is a CR1 (immigrant spouse) visa. Currently that process takes 5 to 7 months from initial filing. You may file as soon as you are ready after marraige. Once the spouse uses the visa to enter the USA, the green card is ordered and usually arrives within about three weeks.

You may also be getting confused with another option called DCF - Direct Consular Filing. This is where the US citizen is legally living in the other country and wants to petition for his wife to move with him back to the US. There is generally a minimum 6 month residency in the other country requirement on the US citizen in order to qualify for this type of processing. If you are living overseas with your wife you can check into this option. If you are just marrying overseas but live in the US then follow pushbrk's advice.

Make that eight months for the CR1. I am in the process of doing it now. The NVC appeared to get a little snowed under with the faster times USCIS was processing the paperwork.

Timelines vary for many reasons including seasons and country. One data point is hardly an indicator. I'm seeing faster times than that even for the PI but NVC processing can vary all over the place due to how the beneficiary and petitioner respond. I am seeing slower responses from NVC in general though.
