I'm a high school guidance counselor in Florida. I'd say she is better off to finish up in Canada. If she refuses to do this, contact your local high school and give them a copy of her transcripts to evaluate so they can let you know if she can graduate with them this year. In most cases, she should be able to enter mid-year and complete her senior classes at the new high school. Usually seniors have completed most of their required classes. I know that in Florida we are able to work with students transferring from out of state (or country in this case).

As for online schools, most of them either charge tuition, are not accredited, or do not issue diplomas.

I know that is seems like a long time to her, but 5 months until graduation will really fly by.

What Universities has she applied to? All acceptances are conditional pending successful completition of her high school graduation requirements.

thank you for your input Arabella

I think we strayed a little bit from my original issues.. My only concern is how switching would be viewed from the colleges perspective. She will have no problem getting the required credits.

everything else we have covered

Like I said in an earlier post there are extenuating circumstances to her situation..I would prefer her to finish there I just don't know if the situation would be a great one..

You prob do not need this, but here it is anyway, lol Prior to getting accepted into my nursing program they required a transcript of ones High school marks, and if you were from another country, ie Canada, one had to get them verified. I used http://www.educationinternational.org/procedure.htm and they were outstanding. I had the results back (1 copy sent to me, 1 directly to the school) BEFORE they had even cashed my cheque!

And again, prob doesn't pertain to this situation, but lot of classes/courses are offered online now. Idid many of my pre-req's online. Some, al one had to do was attend the labs in portion, or met like once a month in class. Schools are becoming a lot more flexible.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Udella,

When she did her tour in november we actually ended up sitting for over an hour with the admissions director..she basicly said that my daughter would be considered as if she were a **boarding school** student and that the most important thing is her SAT marks..she also said that they would absolutely take **transition** into account being that she has had to move around a bit.. I'm so stressed..lol I just want this to work out the best way possible for her..sadly with immigrating we all have to make decisions and sometimes work harder at one thing or another in this process..shes holding up way better than me..haha

thank you flames I will take a look at that link..any extra info I can use the better!

Colleges don't care about switching schools.

They care about Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment and Honors classes; upper level math and science classes, foreign language (in addition to the required English, Math, Science, Social Studies and electives), extracurricular activities/athletics, SAT/ACT scores, vounteerism, letters of recommendation, career aspirations, college essays, etc.

They just look at the data first (GPA, SAT/ACT scores, then the type of courses that were taken (rigorous versus easy- i.e. did she take an additional foreign language class instead of an easy gym elective?, honors versus regular) and finally the rest (sports, clubs, volunteer work, etc.).

I would want to know which colleges/universites she has applied to already. Do you know her overall GPA?

P.S. I don't know what they'll think of the courses from the Canadian high school, but my guess is trigonometry (for example) in Canada is the same as in the US. So besides maybe making you jump through some paperwork hoops, I don't imagine this would prevent her from being admitted to college in the States.

Hi Shawna7,

Personally, I think that your daughter should finish her high school credits in Canada before she comes to the USA for college. It is easier this way, since she doesn't have to worry about transfering credits and/or starting over at a new school in the USA...She's so close to graduating, so why risk it all at this crucial point now?

And no, colleges/universities do not look negatively on Distance Education/Online Education.

As long as it is a formally approved and accredited educational institution and/or curriculum, then so be it.

In fact, I myself prefer studying this way, and if I could go back to college/univeristy, I would study full-time this way too...(which I attempted to do too, and did complete some college this way...but that's another story...lol..to broke to go back to study now for me...lol..)

Since your daughter is in Toronto, Ontario, I thought I might mention this online option to you....

Ontario's Designated Provider of Distance Education

Independent Learning Centre

http://www.ilc.org/index-main.php

This is an Ontario, Canada approved distance-education program for high school students...

And it is free, fully funded and supported by the Ontario Ministry of Education....

Worth looking into....(lol..I did....back in my old high school days, so long ago...but that's another story...)

Hope this helps too. Good luck to your daughter's educational endeavours and good luck with your immigration journeys too.

Ant

Hi everyone.. longtime no post..lol

Ok..I have a highschool situation,

My daughter wants to switch midstream from a toronto highschool down here to south carolina (silly girl decided she wanted to graduate in toronto with her friends and low and behold has changed her mind  )

Does anyone know a) If she switched to online courses just to finish up her credits if that reflects negatively on her college applications

or B) would a better option be just changing highschools for her final semester

She is a senior and has already put her college applications in

Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

thanx

S
