Hi everyone.. longtime no post..lol

Ok..I have a highschool situation,

My daughter wants to switch midstream from a toronto highschool down here to south carolina (silly girl decided she wanted to graduate in toronto with her friends and low and behold has changed her mind  )

Does anyone know a) If she switched to online courses just to finish up her credits if that reflects negatively on her college applications

or B) would a better option be just changing highschools for her final semester

She is a senior and has already put her college applications in

Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

thanx

If she does online, she'll have to make sure the school is accredited. Sadly, not all online high school are accredited. In North Carolina you'll want to see if the school is SACS accredited.

If she wants to transfer for her final year, she'll want to make sure she has a copy of her transcripts from her school in Toronto.

US universities (assuming that is what she applied for) do not look down upon non-traditional acquired courses (on-line, night school, etc). They look at your SAT scores and your high school GPA. If she is looking to go to school in the US she'll need to take the SAT's

Good luck.

Community college is a great route to go, a lot less $$$$. One just has to ensure credits transfer. Not all do. Not sure if I can explain this right, but one could take a "BIO" 101 and it would transfer to a 4 yr program, but if you took a biology class offered by the community college, and it was a NAS 101 (stil a bio class) it would only transfer to a select few universities, make sense? lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Thank you both of you!

She has applied to university, although community college for a year might actually be a great option. I'm glad to hear the universities don't frown upon alternate methods for highschool(I have been reading that online but its good to hear someone actually say it..lol)We will be talking to guidance at her toronto school monday and then the american school guidance..uugh..lol I'm sure we can come up with a sensible solution.

Thank you again for your input!

I would agree that they *used* to be common sense - not any more. They begin prepping in high school in 9th grade for the SATs. You take your PSAT in 10th grade, then the real thing in 11th. It's stupid.

You should get in contact as soon as you can with the highschool counselling department at the SC highschool. They will work with you and your daughter's current counsellor at her Cdn highschool.

Is the SC semestered? If not she may run into problems trying to finish her last few credits. My daughter came from a semestered highschool in ON to a 3 term school in VA.

Seriously - if she is in gr 12 and has a half a semester left, she might be better off finishing up in Canada. What she may not have taken into consideration is that moving, switching schools etc can do a number on her grades and this isn't a time where she wants lower grades due to stress , fitting in or whatever, you know? This is what will get her into University. The howle SAT prep ####### and how intense some US schools are can be pretty overwhelming.

She could come down in June when she's done and get into Community College just fine because she'll be resident. Anyway, just a couple things to think about. My daughter had a hard time switching from semestered to terms and lost some credits (some of her Cdn credits didn't count towards her diploma (she lost 1 or 2 I think) so it would be horrible to lose some and have to take extra courses down here.

I agree with Udella. Try and have her finish at her current highschool. Derailing her final year is going to create havoc.

thank you everyone for your input we'll have to wait and see how things play out tomorrow, there are some extenuating circumstances to all this(which I won't get into) but if guidance at both schools can make it happen she'll be on her way on wednesday..I have to agree it would be best to finish it in toronto I just don't know if its possible... either way I have to stay positive,,it will work out as it should..

I totally agree with Udella as well. It will really be in her best decision to graduate in Toronto, both for practical and for social reasons.

While this isn't on the same level, I switched schools in the middle of grade seven, moving from a fairly small town (Salmon Arm) to Vancouver, and it was a VERY difficult transition due to a change in curriculum, the stigma of being "new" and the generally overwhelming feeling of adapting to a new learning environment.

If she CAN stick it out in Toronto for another five months, I really think she should.

socially its not a concern, she has plenty of friends here..and curriculum seems not be an issue she only needs a couple of credits..my concern was how the colleges or universities in the states would view it,,,and from everything I can find online(plus a few people here) they won't view it a problem as long as the marks are there...it seems all good...mayeb..haha
