Oh god, ditto that sh!t. I've been here almost 10 years now and it's ridiculous, so hard to find any friends within the Russian community here. Snobbish is a very, very mild word to describe them. Gotta catch them "fresh off the boat", then it's possible

Some appeared to us to have a real interest in messing up our relationship if they could. Surprised me. Freinds of ours got sucked into the "I know a Russian guy that will do that job for less" trap, so we didn't go there - but seemed to get clipped points for it Fortunately Vika is past the need to find extra Russian friends now, having made a few girlfriends that are also K visa recipients.

Meh, I've used that "trap" to my advantage many times (plumbers, electricians, etc) But then again, I 90% of that ####### IS a trap.

But Russian community here (no matter the city) really has no correlation whatsoever to how we, russkies, are. In terms of statistics - that's a major F up.

I think it may have to do with mentality. Certain people believe that "Americans and Russians have very little or nothing in common". There is nothing you can do to change their opinion. Just tell them to stay out of your business or stop hanging out with them.

I don't know, that hasn't been our experience. We have 7 other couples who have all become pretty good friends. All the women are RUB and all but one man is American and that one is now a US citizen also (originally from Minsk)

There is one that Alla says is "uppity" but I guess eh is just uppity and the odds of that in any group of 8 women is pretty high. She always seems nice to me which I never mention! LOL We haven't had any Russian plumbers or carpenters foisted upon us though it is fairly well known I can build a mansion by rubbing two sticks together and don't need any such services and often get "volunteered" by my most lovely wife to perform these services at other couples houses (does that make ME the Russian plumber?)

My only discomfort is the level at which the RUB women discuss things which US men as a rule tend to consider private. Nothing seems to be taboo or not for public consumption (and NO it is not limited to sexual things) They will frankly discuss incomes, expenses, the price of rice in China, so to speak, and other things that I was raised to consider "private". OH well.

(big surpise) and all are married to men considerably older than them (minimum 7 years and maximum 30 years age difference) All but one is bald. All but two are fat! I am NOT fat! All are at above average income levels and ALL the women are great cooks. I also found that although Alla almost never drinks alcohol at home (and I never drink at all) she will get going pretty well at one of these parties when she knows she has a designated driver! I guess the Russian-ness can't be supressed completely!

Yes. back when I demanded perfection of myself, it was quite stressful. After learning to relax and settling for mere excellence, things are much easier. I used to be able to build a house with only ONE stick, but have since lightened up on myself and use two.

But I have to admit to never have been swindled by a Russian plumber, that part I do not get tired of.

One other way for the wives to meet other RW usually with American husbands that I have not seen mentioned in this thread is the free ESL classes that are about everywhere. It doesn't matter if your wife is already fluent in English, mine has a bigger English vocabulary than I do but goes for help with her accent and mostly for social reasons.

I live in an area that doesn't have a big population and where it is rare to see anyone Russian. My wife met one RW at the ESL classes and she introduced my wife to a half dozen more. My wife also made a good friend with a Mexican woman from the ESL classes. Most of the RW in the ESL classes would be fairly new arrivals which as some have pointed out is better.

If YOU don't score at least "3" on the "too-sexy-for-my-own-country's-women" R.U.B. scale, (Old, Fat, Bald, Better than average income) I am not sure HOW you ever attracted a HOT RUB woman though.

I also found that the standard US "scale" for grading women (1-10) simply does not work in the FSU. I used a separate "Ukrainian" scale on which Alla, fo example, is a "3". This is determined by the number of Clydesdale horses it would take to pull her off my lap.

Honestly though, up until the whole house/sticks part, this thread sounded MENA for a moment and I had to check my forum I was reading... Ammar refuses to associate with other Arabs and luckily has had very little in the way of awkward meetings with others. he now has made a friend here from Jordan, but there is such a strange dynamic amongst the lot. He has American friends though. He says with Arabs, you have to maintain that culture and it's more stressful. Also, most of them are seperatists, and so they tend to do all male things... he comes from a non-seperating village/family/tribe, so it's a bit of conflict in that he says he would rather spend his time with me. He's shy though.

Oh, no, wait.. I mean he's a terrible oppressor who makes me fluff pillows all day.
