Residence/Citizenship - Sponsor allowed to file unemplyment or not??

I am not sure if this is the appropriate section of the forum for my question but I decided to post it here, since my next step is to file for naturalization.

I have received my permanent residence card (10 year card, conditions are removed) a while ago. Meanwhile my husband who is my "sponsor" had to leave his job and is now looking for a different one. In the meantime (while he is looking for a job) it would be really helpful if he could file for unemployment. However, we are not sure if he is allowed to do that and if and how it would affect my permanent residence and future filing for naturalization/citizenship.

Insight would be helpful! Thank You!

If your husband has paid into a unemployment insurance then he can put in a claim. Him recieving unemployment will have no effect on you applying for Citizenship. The sponsorship that your husband entered into when you got your Greencard is to protect the US Government if you were to claim public funds.. As a US citizen he can claim any benefits he is entitled too.

Thank You Tay for taking the time to reply. Your answer helps a lot. Yes my husband has paid into an unemployment insurance.

Yes he can apply for unemployment. However, unemployment is typically not granted to those who have quit the job (even though they have paid into it) unless there are extreme circumstances that led to them quitting. It is granted with no problem for those who are terminated or laid off. But he can certainly give it a try.

Unemployment compensation is not part of the I-864 contract and doesn't make any difference if you are a LPR or a USC. It certainly doesn't hurt to apply for it, just answer all the questions honestly, they will check will the employer and make the determination.

I was once laid off in a hostile takeover, new company lied about my termination, requested a hearing and brought in witnesses, company not only had to pay me unemployment compensation, but was fined, so it does work both ways. Companies with a poor employment history have to pay a much higher unemployment compensation rate.
