Hey everyone,

So I moved to California 2 days ago and have to go through the whole adjustment process.

I was wondering how long it takes for the SSN to come in? Do I have to do anything in regards to that or just wait?

Someone told me to go to the Social security office and apply for it in person even if you asked for it to be mailed in the application since this will be faster than waiting 3 weeks. Anyone else do that?

Thanks everyone!

Case Completed @ NVC: June 16th 2009

Medical in Toronto: Nov 3rd 2009

Interview in Montreal: Nov 16th 2009: APPROVED!!

Case completion to Interview: 5 long months!

ENTRY to US: November 23rd 2009 @ Pearson Airport

SSN received January 2010

PR card received January 2010

The SS card should come in a couple of weeks - if it doesn't (which it might not, for unknown reasons) you can go down to the SSA office and submit an SS-5 application for one. It's supposed to come automatically but sometimes not.

Yes and you are going to have to wait anyway, they won't have you in there system any sooner than 2 weeks, minimum.

Lots of people have had to do this in spite of indicating on the DS-230 that they would like it mailed to them automatically.

yep, like the others have stated! If after 10 BUSINESS days no SSN, head to the closest office ask about the status of it. be prepared to file for a new one. download the form at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.html

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
