Health insurance when visiting the UK...

I'm a UK citizen- now a dual UK/US citizen, and have been out of the UK for 4 years. I am planning on visiting for Christmas and wondering if I now need travel insurance or if I would get NHS treatment in an emergency... does anyone know what the rules are or where to find out? Similarly, is my newborn son covered? He has a UK passport but was born in the US...?

thanks!

From what my husband said, you should be fine with NHS while you are there. Have a good trip!

Emergency treatment is free, so anything that is done in ER you will not be charged for. Anything else you will be charged. Check out your US health insurance as some do offer cover outside the US.

Try this link: http://www.avert.org/freenhs.htm, where there is lots of good info about what free medical treatment is available.

"In the UK, emergency medical treatment is always free, regardless of your nationality."

You can check with your insurance company about coverage, but I know many policies don't cover overseas. Sounds like you wouldn't need it anyway.

Have a nice trip!

Haha, interestingly enough, the NHS kindly provided me a prescription while I was over there visiting my fiance - and he wasn't even *technically* my fiance at that point. They just needed his UK address. As the others have said, you ought be fine in an emergency.

Our naturalization timeline
1/12/2015 - Application sent to Phoenix service center by USPS priority mail

1/14/2015 - Package received in Phoenix

1/16/2015 - NOA date (hard copy received 1/22)

3/28/2015 - Hard copy interview notice received

4/29/2015 - Interview at Chicago field office - Approved!!!

5/22/2015 - Oath ceremony - Now a US citizen!!!!!!

Thank you, VisaJourney!!!!!
