Social Security SSN question

Greetings!

I was wondering what should my spouse put about SSN in the DS-230 and in the interview? Is it good to put that you want an SSN, I guess if put that you want the SSN that means you want to work, but do they want you to seek employment in the US?

An SSN is not just used for work. It is also used for opening a bank account, buying a car, and even volunterring (especially if a background check is required)

I suggest your wife get an SSN even if she does not desire to work. She may check that box on the DS-230 if she likes, however, most people find it quicker to simply go to the SSN office to get the card.

It is definitely faster to go to the Social Security Office to get the SS number/card. If you check that box on the DS-230, you must wait three weeks (i believe) before you can go to the social security office to request the card. This is to give them time to put it in the system based on the DS-230.

You pretty much need a SSN to exist as a LPR in America... You need it for filing joint taxes and claiming your wife, getting a Drivers Licence or State ID, getting on and opening a bank account and many other reasons...

You can check the box, but if you need the number faster, just go to a local office a week or two after entering... Hubby got his about 9 days after visiting the office...
