Financial Support

Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum, but have found this site to be extremely useful.

I already received my NOA2 (Vermont service Center), but I have an important question about the next step. Specifically, about the financial support.

I am currently unemployed, so I probably won't be able to complete the requirements for financial support. I do plan on having a job before getting married, of course, but that doesn't help me know.

The question is, can I use my father as the sponsor instead of myself? I do have the full support of my parents, and even my extended family, so that's not a problem.

If you're not sure, then where would be the best place to get a more "official" response?

From what I've read so far on the subject, you have to be the sponsor, meaning you are required to submit the affidavit of support form, even if you have no income. Your father would be a co-sponsor and would also fill out a form and provide the evidence requested.

Also, use the search option on the Foreign Embassy Consulate forum to check for older threads on the matter. This link should also be helpful: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=305

There's a page with tips about it. A must-see: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...mp;page=support

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

aarif,

For the visa, yes your father can sponsor your fiance(e). If your father qualifies as an acceptable sponsor in the opinion of the consular officer who processes the visa application.

For adjustment of status following marriage, you must be the sponsor but your father can be a Joint Sponsor with you if you still fall short of the requirements at that time.

A good place to get official information would be the Foreign Affairs Manual - 9 FAM 40.41 Public Charge, Notes. Be careful to distinguish between the material that deals with non-immigrant visas, which includes the K visas, and the material that deals with immigrant visas and adjustment of status.

Sorry for the late reply, but my fiance is from Pakistan.

Thanks for the answers so far.

I sent an email to the London embassy asking the same question and they said that who ever was going to be the person giving me financial support must fill the form out . So in my case it was my mother in law to be!
