Questions about requested documentation

On Monday I have my citizenship interview, I was just going through the document check list that came with my interview letter and getting everything ready. I noticed that it says to bring an IRS form 1722, I don't have one of these, and am almost certain that I am not going to have one by Monday morning. So it says I can take my last 3 years of tax returns, I have these, but which parts do I need to take? do I just need to take the 1040 forms?

Also, it says to bring certified copies of birth certificates of children born in the USA, I don't have certified copies, I have the originals (unless those are the certified copies). I have made my own copies of everything, and plan to take the originals as well.

I have up until this point been pretty calm, but now that it is getting close am worried about these 2 documents. Is what I have going to be OK?

Thanks.

Did you send tax transcripts along with your N-400 when you submitted. If so take those. If you take the F1040 I believe you have to take other stuff as well such as W2s, but as I'm taking tax transcripts I haven't took closely at anything else.

Hi Naiku,

I have no idea about tax returns (I didn't send any..but that's another story)...but...

For the birth certificates of children, yes, the original copies are most ikely certified copies. Certified copies means that there is an official seal and/or signature on them from the issuing government agency, so that they proven are genuine that way. Just bring th original to the interview, and you should be ok there. In my case, I also sent a copy of my son's birth certificate when I submitted it with my N-400 application. And I brought the original certificate with me for the interiview. Lol...though needless to say, the IO thought the photocopy was ok, and didn't ask to see the original even though I had it with me...Maybe it was because I brought my son with me that day too...guess they didn't want to ask any further..lol..

So yes, bring the original birth certificate of your children. And bring any other originals of other documents that you submitted with your application before and originals of anything else they ask of you. Don't worry..you'll be fine there, bringing all of the original documents for your interivew.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your inteview and for the rest of your journey too.

If you bring your tax forms, bring everything - the W2s, the attachments and the 1040s - you can bring the whole tax return if you don't use a transcript.

Bring the 'original' birth certificates that you have. Make a copy that you can leave with them if they don't have one already. Bring originals of any forms you submitted with the application. They may not even request to see them but they have the right to request to see the original of all documents submitted as evidence.

You should be fine. I brought everything to my interview and they only wanted to see my green card, DL and passport - not even the originals of my marriage certificate or anything. This really isn't a difficult interview - it is done face to face in the interviewer's office and isn't a scary situation at all. Good luck tomorrow!

That was easy! The hardest part was trying not to get bored while waiting around for about 2 hours. I got there around 10:10am, appointment at 10:40am, got called in around 12:15pm and was out of there by 12:30pm. The officer was very friendly, only wanted to see green card, driving license and passport, it was actually very relaxed.

Sadly no oath ceremony due to my zip code, so I have to wait around for a letter with the oath date, but nothing really to worry about now.

I'll apply for citizenship in a few months. I don't think we kept the tax stuff for the pasy years. However, I usually request an official copy of my tax transcript from the IRS. Guess that's ok?

Yes I submitted tax transcripts for the relevant years, they haven't asked me to take anything else to the interview.
