Funny thing happened tonight.

I was trying to determine what the next step is with Immigration, after getting the Permanent Residence card... I'm wondering -whats the next step.

Actually I have been taking this whole thing one step at a time.

But anyways, So I get the wifes Perm Res card out to check the expiration date (02/2011)

and I see on the card it says "USSR" for country.

Does anyone else have this on their cards?

By the way... what is my "next step"?

See what happens when you are using cheap glasses from the Drug store...you miss the "fine print".

The wife, who has better eyes, tell me is says "country of birth"... not country of origin.

So that kinda answers that .... but as far as my "next step".... I'm still wonderin.

I think next step will be lifting of conditions and receiving the 10 year card.

USSR on my wife's card too.

Alla's says "Ukraine SSR" which is basically the same. It is basically what you listed on the I-485.

The next step is applying for the 10 year card within 90 days of expiration of the two year card. Just more fees, biometrics and done for 10 years. Not a big deal but more fees as always.

Yeah, my wife's US Green Card listed her "Country of Birth" as USSR. Her US citizenship certificate lists her "Country of Former Nationality" as Belarus. Her US passport lists her "Place of Birth" as Russia.

However, my 24 year old stepdaughter's US Green Card lists her "Country of Birth" as Belarus even though the USSR was still thumping along when she was born in Belorussia in 1985.

My grandparents' US documents are similarly "all-over-the map" since they were born in Tsarist Russia in what is now Belarus and immigrated to the USA before the Russian Revolution of 1917. My grandfather's 1943 US citizenship certificate lists his "Country of Former Nationality" as Poland, but other US documents list him as Russian. My grandmother never became a US citizen and was a citizen of the USSR until she died in 1967. My grandparents were Russian speaking ethnic Belorussians.

Go figure! Borders and governments are like farts in the wind. ;)

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
