Real estate agents. This isn't REALLY a vent, just an observation.

My Sister has had her house on the market for over a year. I personally think this is because her real estate agent is a slacker. This week she cancelled the contract with the woman. She tried to do this a few months ago but she (RE woman) really wanted to keep the contract until January as she had invested so much in advertising etc <roll eyes>.

Ffwd to the day before yesterday, my Sister emails her, says cancel it - the real estate agent tries to tell her she might have to share some of the costs associated with advertising the property up to this point - but here is the hilarious part. She tells my Sister that she advertised the property on the radio. My Sister said, the radio, that's the first i've heard of that.

Well the real estate woman's Husband owns a website and he streams a retro 'station' that no one would listen to. She said while they host the 'station' she still has to pay for production costs. What?? What does that involve, her Husband sitting in front of a microphone?

Oh and my Sister's realestate agent sends her a text - do you want me to send the termination contract to 253 (as in house number) - umm no....that's not the house number of the house you were supposed to be marketing for the last year.....

Anyway, this week I emailed a realtor here, to ask about a property, she emailed back - an answer to my question. Anyway, by mistake, yesterday, I emailed her to ask if we could see the property tonight. (I meant to email someone else about a different property  ) - this was her reply:

Hi Trailmix,

I am actually leaving on vacation this afternoon, so I am forwarding this to my colleague AJ, who can call you and arrange for the viewing.

Who wants to bet $5 that AJ won't be emailing me?

Anyway, this brings me to the point of this rant - a lot of these agents are slackers and the people trying to sell probably don't even know it!!

Well he might - but he probably won't.

But that's not really my point. Tonight my Husband is actually going to look at the other place, on his way home from work. Had ms real estate agent actually ensured her cohort contacted me, he would probably be going to see that one too.

So the point is - because he hasn't contacted me, we may well put an offer in on this other place - so where does that leave the other seller?

It's a tough market out there and I would want my real estate agent to actually pay attention to people that contacted him/her - immediately.

Just a guess, but I think some of them got into the RE game when selling homes was easy-breezy in Alberta, and they have no idea of the drive needed and how to work in a tough market. They presume that people will just walk in the door and say I love it. SOLD!

And the radio thing is just insane. Who would hear an ad and say, that's the house for me.

Hubby had a slacker too, did squat and the property never sold...barely had any showings. When the contract ended, she had the nerve to ask for payment to recover advertising costs so hubby shelled out $200. When he told me about it, I ranted. No results, no commission--All advertisement costs are the real estate agent's to bear! But he already paid and the money's gone.

Then a year later, the real estate agent-turned-MLM-marketer surfaced to ask for money to recover the advertisement cost--apparently, she was still advertising the condo (liar!) Hubby, thankfully, wrote her off.

Grr. Weather conditions in the D.C. area look pretty bad for the next few days. Worse still...weather conditions in Minneapolis look REALLY bad next week.

My wife flies out of Baltimore on Christmas Eve and has a layover in Minneapolis en route to Seattle.

Last year her Christmas Eve flight was canceled and she had to fly out on Christmas Day instead, causing us to miss Christmas dinner with my parents. I really don't want that to happen again this year. :(

Lots of snow forecasted!!! i work tomorrow night, should be interesting!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
