1 million reasons to hate Canada Post

First of all...YAY!!! My passport is here!!! So I can fly back home on Friday!!! :)

Well...but it would have been so much more happiness if it wasn't for Canada Post! I heard people complain here about them before but I am just shocked at how bad their actual service is!

So you might know I bought Priority Courier Next AM envelope (instead of Xpresspost, so that I get my passport back asap)...paid about $22. The consulate had no problem with that as long as the envelope was the right size.

During the interview the consul told me that my passport will be shipped next day most likely (which would be Friday) but it was shipped on Monday. Here is a note for all those waiting: it seems like MTL is sending passports with IV in batches since Steve Treible's wife had her interview in the beginning of the week, I was toward the end of it, and both passports were sent out the following Monday.

You should never rely of Canada Post Tracking! maybe except the moment when your envelope was accepted at the postal office...Anyway, so Next AM delivery in my case should be Tuesday morning by noon...and of course it wasn't. I called CP and asked ####### was going on, since tracking still showed MTL instead of TOR...and a very nice lady (actually their misinformation line is at least nice) told me that actually my Priority Courier shows as Xpresspost service in her system!!! When I checked on their website though, it said product type: priority courier! So she was pretty helpless and asked me to call after 5pm and they will open an inquiry file and track the thing in their facilities. I did that, and actually it was good for nothing really...So this morning I checked the tracking number again and...it said Successfully Delivered! So I rushed down to check my mailbox, and....NOTHING! Checked for the delivery notice and...NONE!!! Now I got really worried...so I called their misinformation line again...and they of course know SH!T (I am still really upset about it)...Finally an hour later my mailman shows up and he has my envelope. Torn between being really happy and super upset, I just asked him what happened, and he said that their sorting facilities make mistakes. #######?

Eventually, I took the envelope and went back up to check it out. After I was done with staring at the contents, I decided to call CP one more time and tell them to close the inquiry on this shipment and ask them for my $22 back (coz next AM delivery is guaranteed). And guess what, after I gave her my tracking number before I even explained anything she says: It seems like the item has been returned to sender! I nervously grabbed my envelope and thanks god(ness) it was there coz otherwise I would get a heart attack! Who need thrillers is you can deal with Canada Post instead!

All that matters now is that I can jump on the plane back home on Friday! :)

Yikes!!!

FedEx sounds pretty good to me right about now . . .

Congrats Mikey! Maybe they figured that because the visas were batch mailed they had to be batch delivered also, LOL!

Happy travelling and best of luck to you!

Here's my take on it (and I used to work at a Canada Post outlet, so I have an idea of how they sort things).

Most likely, your Priority Courier envelope went out in a bin with a bunch of Xpresspost envelopes at the Consulate. I think it's safe to assume that most people get the Xpresspost as they suggest.

Once it left the faciliaty, it may have been wedged inbetween the Xpresspost envelopes and continued through that sorting process and was never picked out to go into the Priority Courier sorting area...

So then it was given to a post man to deliver in a pile of other Xpresspost envelopes. The Xpresspost envelopes are generally left until the afternoon to deliver and so yours just never got sorted properly because it went out with a huge batch of Xpresspost envelopes.

I oculd be wrong, but that's my theory.

As far as saying it's been delivered, the postman probably scanned all his items at the beginning of his route to save time and then delivered them one by one into the mailboxes. Since I'm sure not everyone is checking every hour or whatever so he gets away with that. Generally, they scan each item as it goes into a mailbox or gets a signature... but I'd say the majority just do them all at once.

Mikey! Glad that your envelope reached you safely! That is the most important part!!!

Im not post-expert, but do you think that maybe what happened is they prolly got the mail after CP hours on Monday (does it say what time the mail was logged on Monday?). I know with USPS theyll say "arrived at facility on Monday" but the shipping doesnt actually happen until Tuesday. The CP near my house, for example, will take mail and log it in their system until 8pm in the evening, but the last mail that is sent out for delivery is at 5 pm, so actual mail that gets logged after 5 is actually sent out the next day :/ Its kind of dumb for Canada Post to do that and even dumber for the embassy to submitt packages to be mailed after office hours... but Im sure thats what they do because its another way they can make our lives more miserable!

I am super boggled, however, that they said that your envelope was "returned to sender" -- I mean, unless she meant that YOU sent it to yourself? Then it was definitely mailed back to sender! LOL!!!

SIGH, am going to add Canada Post to the list of stressors for this month of Novemeber. :/

On that note, did anyone get interviewed on Oct 30? Did they get their envelope today too? :P

Again, congratulations!!!!

I agree with this part! I tend to obsessively track all my shipments with USPS and I do notice that they will scan shipped products/packages "delivered" when it hasnt actually been delivered. In that case, if it says "delivered" and its not there yet, youd have to wait til your local mailman does his route :P

Glad you finally got it Mikey!

We should make a list of all the weird things Canada Post has done to people on VJ alone. It would be an interesting read!

Ya any Canadian will have a Canada Post story or two. I have a recent one, not related to immigration issues, but had ordered a second credential (university degree) and you can't bend those. The university mailed it out in a large white envelope with LARGE red heavy print saying DO NOT BEND....it was all over the envelope and on both sides.

I get home to find it folded in half in my mailbox, with the letters DO NOT BEND right there in front of me. Needless to say the degree was bent/folded and I wasn't able to get the crease out. So I complained to CP and they graciously offered to pay for this and had me order another one. This time I went and picked it up not wanting to chance another mishap. I can't believe the mail carrier missed it; and I wonder if it wasn't someone disgruntled and thought fakk it, doing it anyway.

Hi Mikey78,

Congratulations about getting your passport with your visa in it! Good luck with your trip flying back home too.

Welcome to New York State!... :star:

Yeah, I know what you mean about Canada Post....They are definitely unreliable, indeed! Lol...I remember losing a few pieces of mail and packages from them before...not too happy with that..

Oh well, I live in the USA now..and USPS is so much better! Oh yeah, and I love Saturday service/delivery too! Lol..the only problem: my mailbox is literally a mile away, as they won't deliver to my front door (I live too far away in the country/rural area). So it sure makes for an interesting trip!

Good luck with the rest of your trip back home and with the rest of your journey. No more worries about Canada Post anymore for you!

Ant

P.S. You might want to head over to the SSA and DMV to update your new immigration status too....
