ok - so my husband and I got married last month in Washington state. We have been mulling this over as to who will move where. I think we have pretty much decided that I will move to the US with my children. Now I am in need of expert advice on what process we need to start first. What am I applying for etc and where do I find forms and payment information. Are we better to hire somebody to do this or is it fairly easy to do ourselves? Also - I understand that I will need to go to Montreal for interview - will he need to attend with me? He is not currently allowed to enter Canada due to a DUI four years ago. We just don't know the best way to proceed. Your help is appreciated.

You are in the right place.

I am assuming you are back in Canada now, right? If so, you will have to file for either a K-3 or a CR-1 visa (the Cr-1 being the BEST option). Familiarize yourself with the VJ guides. Hubby does not have to attend the interview, so no worries there. :)

Welcome to VJ! Since your already married, your going to want to check the K3 or CR-1 visas! At 1 time the k3 was much faster to obtain than the CR-1, but that is usually not the case now. time frame wise they run pretty even, making the cr-1 route the better route to go as it has more benefits and it costs less! Where do you reside in Canada? ALL cr-1 interviews take place in Montreal. But for the K3, they take place in Mtl and Vancouver. Manitoba and west goto Vancouver. Ontario and East goto Mtl for the k3. SOOOO if you do live in 1 of the western provinces, the k3 may be faster, but keep in mind one can not work right away with a k3, where as with the CR-1 you can.

Comparing them: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...mp;page=compare

At the top of the K3 and CR-1 forums are guides, pretty much show you what to do step by step! At the top of the page is a link to EXAMPLE FORMS, already filled out!!

You wil find out that the paperwork isnt that bad, its the waiting that will kill ya! Welcome to VJ

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
