how much tax do we pay when we import a car

I'd like to know how much tax I will need to pay at POE and at the CA registration when I import my car.

None, your first car is not taxed. Any car after the first car is taxed. POE charges 6$ USD to do the paperwork.

Canadian car? I drove my car over and all i required to have for customs is the DOT approved letter from GM. Depending on the state, prices will vary for registration and plates. I payed $275 for registration and plates in Arizona. I did not have to pay anything at POE as I am a USC.

As long as you just didn't buy the car...no you don't pay anything other then the $6. bucks at the POE. Make sure you have your letter or letters for the manufacturer. GM did separate ones, one for the safety and one for the emmission controls standards. Then you'll have to register and lisc. it in whatever state your moving to. They also tell you that if you sell it within two years, then you will have to pay duty on it.

yep if its brand new you might have to pay something but im not sure of the condition of your car! Sorry i cant help with the California registration question really, it will cost some money to register some of it will be a 1 time fee then you will have to pay once yearly i think to renew it? Here in Nebraska it cost me 217$ to register my car for the first time. Every state is different for the cost tho.

This does not apply to visa holders, a visa holder is allowed to import ONE car free of duty. If that car is brand new however they may charge some duty for it.

JUST WANT TO ADD MY 2 CENTS...

I had issues at the boarder... my car was bought Dec 2008. I crossed POE May 2009. It was an hour of bickering back and forth between 2 customs officers...one was saying I did not have to pay and this other jerk was giving these two other guys that were helping me...a hard time, saying I had to pay 4% duties....I was polite and said that I did my research on their site and because it was my first personnal import and purchased the prior year, that I did not have to pay. Well the jerk walked off and said 'fine if you want to either do it the RIGHT way or your way...whatever' to the other guy...he finally processed me, not having to pay. THANK GOD! (I saved almost $4000!!!) I was also told that I would have to pay 6% in PA state taxes when I registered...and low and behold, I did so last month, and there was no mention of owing taxes....I sure as heck didn't bring it up....so I ended up paying only $95 to register my car....

Be prepared and be polite...just because they work for Homeland Security, does not mean that they know everything about POE....the first form they handed me to complete to import my car was for LIVESTOCK! lol...I politely said 'excuse me, it's an SUV, not a horse' lol

ps. just want to add, that even though you should not have to pay...I was told at the boarder that it is normally 4% of the purchase price or book value at the time...book value if the purchase is less than....
