Can anyone reccommend a decent immigration lawyer in Minnesota? Preferably one that will not cost an arm and both legs?

This is a partial response I received from a congressman's office:

"You might want to consult a good immigration attorney about any other options you have before you proceed. You should definitely get a very good legal opinion about having your son come visit".

Thanks

I used a great lawyer, granted I'm in Michigan, but he helps with cases all over the States. If you'd like his information go ahead and PM me. He is willing to let you pay monthly payments if needed and was very professional and great with my wife's complicated case. Good luck!

My wife has been back since June 5, 2007. Now we're just livin' man, L I V I N :)

Most people on this board will say something to the tune of "don't bother with an immigration lawyer" or "immigration lawyers are clueless." Some definitely are and if you put the time and energy into doing the process yourself, you really don't need one. However, if you don't have the time or aren't particularly careful when filling out forms and reading directions, you may want a lawyer. As with any professional, you'll need a good one and those might be difficult to come by -- at least ones that are easily affordable.

One thing to remember is that Visa Journey is a site dedicated to the "do-it-yourself" style of immigration. If you can do it yourself -- and many, including myself, have done just that -- then there's no need to hire a lawyer. However, I might advise you to have a consultation with an immigration attorney. Sometimes those are free (and even if it's not, it's usually a small charge) and make up your mind then.

Hi CdnMN,

I understand that most immigration cases don't need lawyers, but in unusual and/or complex circumstances, a good lawyer is definitely needed, as doing it yourself would cause more problems down the road.

I don't know about Minnesota, but I do know of a good and helpful immigration lawyer in New York State that I used for my AOS a few years ago (my case was somewhat complex), who might be able to help you, despite being in a different state. They were very reasonable in their rates (did a sliding scale thing and charged the minimum for us..a fraction of what other lawyers would charge, as we shopped around), and even went with us for the interview. Very good service and a good experience that I had with them and would recommend them to others.

If you want more information about this lawyer, feel free to pm me, and I'll give you more info about them.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your journey too.

Hi CdnMN,

By the way....

Here are the things that we did when we were looking around for lawyers for the AOS:

1) Searched on the internet and the phone book for immigration lawyers in our area. Shopped around for many different lawyers, as we wanted to find the best one and at a reasonable cost for our case.

2) Made sure they were a qualified lawyer, specializing in the practice area of immigration, and preferably with many years of experience too.

3) Asked them how much they charged. Do they charge by the hour? By the case, etc.? Negociated costs with them, and method of payment (payment plans, one-time fees, etc.). Asked exactly all the costs and expenses involved we were paying them for (dispersements, mailing fees, by-the-hour, overtime, etc.)

4) Asked them if they can do a phone consultation beforehand and/or can evulate in-person for free or at a discounted fee before hiring them. Explained our full situation first, then decided to hire them, based on all their answers as to what they were going to do for our case.

5) If you can, get recommendations from others, like here on VJ for example, (in our case we found it ourselves though). By the way, if you need the information about the immigration lawyer that we used for the AOS, feel free to PM me, and I'll reply back with that specific information.

Hope this helps. Good luck with the rest of your immigration journey.

Ant

P.S. For I-751 and N-400, we decided to do it ourselves, as it was pretty straight-forward and we wanted to save costs there.
