Dude. Signature required means that the delivery person MUST get a signature in order to successfully deliver the envelope.

Do you want your passport sitting in your mailbox? I think not. I don't know for a fact that this particular type of letter would be left in mailbox if no one was home, but don't take the risk (maybe someone who has been thru this can confirm this)

Getting a signature is like a kind of registered mail. It guarantees that it will be delivered to a human being, at your residence, and there is a record of who signed for it.

If anyone ever stole your passport enroute to you, there would be a record of it, the signature would be captured (if someone forged your name, gah), it would show what time the actual delivery signature occurred. Tres importante if you ask me..

Meaning, it's less that Montreal requires it, but it's highly recommended for your own piece of mind.

I ask again. Do you want your passport sitting in your mailbox?

Actually, as I recall, Montreal actually recommends or asks that you get the signature sticker on the envelope.

I remember asking the same question and when I read their instructions closely, they did either require or highly recommend it.

Yeah getting the signature is best, but it doesn't mean Canada Post is going to follow the instructions. Alot of the time they'll dump it at your door or whatever.

I feel like I've walked into someone else's conversation.

haha did i come on a little strong? my dry wit maybe didn't translate.

the proverbial Dude!

Anyway, it seems like a good idea.

JillA, yeah I'd be a bit annoyed if they did that, considering a signature was requested. Some packages have very important or confidential things inside them.

okie dokie

well, sounds like Dude is in big trouble.

But to answer the question - yes, I want my passport sitting in the mailbox.

As an aside, when the U.S. consulate in Calgary mails out passports they mail them out regular mail.

heh. yeah, it was aimed at no one in particular. just occurred to me.

you want it in your mailbox because you can get it sooner that way (ie not the next day once it arrives at the postal outlet)?

No I just don't care how they send it out

signature, no signature - doesn't matter to me.

It's all about what your concerns are - if I were a K1 visa applicant I would probably make sure I had the signature option on my mailer, because if it all gets lost it would be a really big hassle.

Mine had the signature required sticker as requested but my mailman just left it in my mailbox, actually folded in half, half hanging out of my mailbox which is on a country road across from my residence. I was ticked!
