As the title suggest, what are the quirky things you miss from your old country?

For me I miss horn sound, and I used to miss ceiling fan sound while sleeping, I have solved that problem by getting a ceiling fan for our apartment and banning AC at nights.

So share away!

My hubby insists on having the table fan running all night even when winter begins (we don't have a ceiling fan) - then we have to bundle up with electric blankets! Recently I was looking at our table fan and wondering - how to clean it? It is full of dust that makes us have sniffles!

We do appreciate the AC on REALLY hot days; otherwise, we just use the table fan.

I'd say I DON'T miss the vehicle horns, so noisy! However it is odd not having people around all the time, here it sometimes looks like a ghost town and we feel like in a bubble.

I didn't miss eating out in India but I miss not being able to just walk around the block and get a big plate of fresh idlee, dosa, puri, etc. We make those at home now and then, soaking the rice and daal for idlees and having with groundnut chutney. Yum! :star:

Talking about Idli, puri and dosa......we went for Indian shopping today, we got a Chinese grocery store out here which sells Indian products and I am happy to say that our fridge is filled with all the Indian goodies today :D

I got all sorts of veggies from louki to karela and me and hubby loves these Swaad brand frozen masala dosa and sambhar this store got. They also sell samosas and a lot of Indian sweets, oh and I got all my fish too. Me is happy today :luv:

Nothing like Indian goodies! Our closets are full of all those spice mixes - rasam, sambar, biryani, masala, pullihora, etc. :star:

Third, you miss dense fog?! You must be from a mountain or hill station area. Come over to Fresno in the winter, we have PLENTY of fog for you, sooo scary driving to work in the morning when I can hardly see 10 feet in front of the car! :help:

Oh yah ddartt1, rain hitting the tin roof... I liked the feeling being all safe and warm when storms were raging outside, and yes, we could really hear the rain. Here I hardly even know when it is raining.

I miss sleeping outdoors on the roof in the summer. It was so nice the calm, warm, quiet outdoors, falling asleep while looking up at the multitude stars in the sky.

I also miss drying my clothes outside, the smell of sun-dried clothes is sooo nice! :luv:

Talking about rain, I miss RAIN itself. I am so used to tropical rain, where it rains non-stop for days with strong winds. Yes a lot of times I hated that kind of rain back in India but now I miss that rain :P I guess I can never be truly happy

Oh yes playing Sunday cricket with his friends, my hubby misses that. If he was doing that now maybe he wouldn't have put on 25 pounds in these last two years.

I do not miss the muddy roads and damp-smelling clothes during rainy season. Here in Fresno we are in 3rd or 4th year of drought so it hardly ever rains and when it does, just a sprinkle. Convenient for commutes to work and shopping but hubby is SO happy whenever it rains, he misses the Indian rain too.

I miss the road side food.. Like the parathas and the Indian-chinese food from road-side stalls.. Over here I would not even think of eating from a roach-coach, but I would from India because it is just sooooo good.

Lol, I'm American and I agree with you! I ate from places like that almost every day on my trip to India, sometimes more than once a day. I also drank the water and lived lol. I didn't even get sick while I was there, and like you I would NEVER even think about eating from a roach coach in America lol. It's just sad....I'm such a traitor hahaha...oh well.

Yes, I'm from a hill station. It is so much fun watching football in dense fog :P and you have no idea what is going on the ground but you cheer coz you hear people who are closer to ground cheering. Sometimes you hear people cheer and find out that it was the wrong football team.

I miss pani puri and i miss fried fish. What kind of fish is good for frying in U.S?? I tried mackrel once but was a waste of time and poor fish. IS anyone Bengali here?? Any tip for fried fish?? :D
