well for sure it wont be like india but this is a pretty decent place people walking all over cuz of recent health kicks, also people trying to stop smoking things like that.

I would love to be in a place where I could see more people walking all over, during winter it gets worse. Really it feels like you live in a ghost city or something.

well come on up then :) we live at the foot hills of the mountains so we dont get a lot of snow but we do get some, and its nice and pretty green here but we pay for that with the rains we get in the fall and spring

Do you have any grocery store out there which sells Indian produces. If so I am all game, can't live without my Indian stuff

I am so bad, I made my dad fed-ex me stuff from India during my first month out here in US. I was all crying and all, so he made a parcel full of goodies and sent me

Hi Moksha welcome, I remember you from before. :)

Plans for Dipavali? I guess just looking at the fireworks online. :crying: Instead of sitting under the Indian stars hearing them and falling asleep listening to the village Hari Kathas going on till dawn. :P

ok, so for over 2 years now, i have been asking my dear, sweet husband to teach me hindi. his reply has always been wait until i get to the usa because it will take up a lot of time. well, the issue is, my father in law speaks no english, and my mother in law speaks as much english as i do hindi. so he (husband) thought buying me a hindi book would help. well, it would if i knew how to pronounce what i was reading <_< .

anyways, i said all that to say this... i bought a pack of 3 hindi conversation cds from borders yesterday  . i think it is best not to tell him although, occassionally, he does sign on to this account. it will be a surprise when i start speaking to him

how is everyone?

Great you are learning Hindi, kaushalia! The best way to learn a language is to SPEAK it. I suggest first learning a few phrases and using them often around the house, every day. Then expand from there. That's how I learned Telugu while in India. We still speak probably 70-80% Telugu at home, even though hubby wants me to speak more English with him so he will get more fluent. But I love speaking Telugu so much and don't want to forget the language!

 the problem with just speaking it at home is i live alone. so no one to listen. of course, i haven't even opened the case. i remember some phrases from when i worked there, and everyone was so excited to teach me. of course hindi was combined with punjabi. and on top of that, my best friend's in-laws are cambodian, and try to teach me too. after awhile, all of the languages (hindi, punjabi, and kmai <- cambodian) all blend together

I will say this much - learning in Hindi can be tough! Especially, like you said, depending on who teaches it can easily be a mix. I've used Rosetta Stone [good but pricy], a couple of books, and here I got workbooks for the written language.

We were out picking up dinner one night and there was a children's bookstore next to the food joint - I go in and start looking at books and see that they have a range of picture dictionaries. I get all excited because I learn better with pictures/images than just text. STB Mr Catknit asks if there is an English/Hindi picture dictionary. No joke, the sales chick says "oh for what age group?" and he looks at me and I look at him and we both turn to the sales chick and with him pointing at me. Saleschick started to giggle and said "oh". Poor woman felt bad and I told her it was fine, it's just better for me to learn this way, that I know it looks silly.

I totally love that dictionary, by the way. Probably one of my favorite Hindi books.

I have a train to catch :dance::dance: . I'll be back in about a week but we may be ducking into the occasional cyber cafe while in Kerela!

I pretty much have the same problem. My huband (USC) is hispanic. Although his grandparents were born here, they hardly speak any English.. I tried using the rosetta stone and learned a few words in Spanish, but I really need someone help me practice it. My husband finds it easier to talk to me in English and so he refuses to talk to me in Spanish.. If I attempt to talk to him in Spanish, he will laugh at my mistakes and correct me and will then reply back in English  I thinking about enrolling in Spanish classes at the local community college and I hope it works!

i used to teach esl to spanish speakers, but since i haven't done that in years, i have forgotten most of the language. i can read it better than i can speak it nowadays. i remember the students and i would have a bilingual conversation. they would ask me in spanish, and i would answer in english and vice versa.
