My fiance's from Taiwan and they celebrate this too.

I tried mooncakes last year when I was down in the US at this time.

The ones we got were so small, and interesting flavours.

I think we got green tea, plum, red bean and... chocolate? I dont remember exactly.

They were really good, and really pretty.

We got them from a Chinese bakery in the area.

They also make awesome bread and cake to die for.

Ok, so here's the deal with mooncakes. Depending on each family tradition mooncakes are either 1) a nice little part of the celebration or 2) like the fruit cake your elderly aunt gave you in 1983 (which has long since petrified) that is passed around each year as a 'gift'.

mooncakes are a big deal in central china. the more decorative the packaging the more you impress the recipient with a sense of your relation to them. red and gold packaging with small greasy cakes of atrocious flavours that cannot be eaten, but would be reasonably good for use as a fire starter are to be expected. grease was a valuable commodity during hard times in the cultural memory, so the greasier the cake the more impressive it is. ditto for sugar.

I like mooncakes, very tasty! Go to your local Chinese grocer and buy a couple and surprise her.

Most mooncakes consist of a thin tender skin enveloping a sweet, dense filling. The mooncake may contain one or more whole salted egg yolks in its center to symbolize the full moon. Very rarely, mooncakes are also served steamed or fried.

Traditional mooncakes have an imprint on top consisting of the Chinese characters for "longevity" or "harmony" as well as the name of the bakery and the filling in the moon cake. Imprints of the moon, the Chang'e woman on the moon, flowers, vines, or a rabbit (symbol of the moon) may surround the characters for additional decoration.

Mooncakes are considered a delicacy; production is labor-intensive and few people make them at home. Most mooncakes are bought at Asian markets and bakeries. The price of mooncakes usually ranges from $10 to $50 (in US dollars) for a box of four although cheaper and more expensive mooncakes can also be found.

Then again I like a small portion of fruitcake ever holiday too. Like eggnog etc., it's something you do for that holiday. Festive!!

We have moon cakes in Japan as well!

They are of course originally from China, but were changed in a Japanese way.

No egg yolk inside and tastes a little different.
