Registering a US marriage in Morocco

Hey everyone :star:

Has anyone successfully registered a US performed marriage in Morocco? I know the topic has come up many times in the past but I have yet to see any success stories....actually maybe a couple, but not many. I know the Moroccan consulate has made it harder and harder....

so.....I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to register the marriage directly in Morocco, like on a visit there. It would seem like it should be possible.....but I hope it's not anywhere near as similar to the process of getting married in Morocco (since the couple is already married in cityhall and the mosque here).

Any insight?

We have not been able to successfully register our marriage from here because the Moroccan Consulate here changed its regulations in February of 2009. :( We are hoping to bring all our marriage documents from here in the US to Morocco this summer and register directly there... inchallah. It could prove really difficult seeing as we are expecting our first little bundle of joy in a few months....

Please let me know if you find any news!

We are having our U.S. marriage registured in Algeria, we had all our docs translated in Arabic, marriage cert, my birth cert, and my divorce decrees and sent them to the Algeria Consulate in Washington, D.C. as per thier instrucitons to us.

They said it can take up to a year to show on file in Algeria, so we will see.

Truly happy!!!

New life, new adventures, and a new attitude.

Hi guys, just curious, why do you want to register the marriage in Morocco? My fiance is coming Oct 1, and we'll be married in November. What's the advantage of registering with the Moroccan consulate? What does it have to do with having a kid??

Sorry for my ignorance!

Oh, and l3id mubarek!

Thanks!

Well, Morocco doesn't recognize US civil marriages. It used to be that getting married here Islamically (either in addition to your civil marriage or just alone) was enough to register it here with the consulate. But that has gotten a lot harder and they have made the rules crazy complicated.

It's a personal choice to register your marriage here. You don't HAVE to. But, it irks me that my husband's home country doesn't even see us as married. For all they know, he's "single". If we travel back there, it's possible we wouldn't be able to even stay in the same hotel. I've heard of married couples having this problem. Plus, when you have children in Morocco, you get a Family Book which is basically a register of your marriage and children born to you. But if you're not registered there as being married, then no family book. Children born to you are seen as born out of wedlock.

These are just my personal feelings about this and again, my personal choice about registering. Others may have other reasons and other opinions about it.

So, what can we do if we want our marriages to be recognized in Morocco - get married again there? Can anyone outline what steps need to be taken? Is it a problem if the USC spouse is not Muslim?

Thanks

No, it's not a problem. You have to be married by an Imam, with 2 muslim witnesses...then they give you a "certificate of marriage". That's what you need to register your marriage in Morocco...that much I know. It's the process of doing it from here that is confusing. I have research to do! :star:

I had the family book done last year just by providing a US marriage certificate that was issued by a Texas Muslim mosque. Even the new Modawana (family law for Muslims) states clearly that marriages performed by a mosque are recognized.

Well, in our case, we didn't do any of those things - we were just married by an officiant - no Imam, no Muslim witnesses.... so now what?
