I'm reading the below website and apperantly even if we "quit" our job,we might be able to get an EI

http://www.visajourney.com/wiki/index.php/...ting_to_the_U.S.

Has anybody applied for it within 30 days and got approved? It's just hard to believe that they would pay you EI since you quit volunterily.

thnx

Yes and yes. If you read the pinned EI thread at the top of Canada forum, you'll find a plethora of info and details.

You definitely can get EI if you quit your job -- you have to have "just cause" in doing so, though. A great example of "just cause" is quitting to move to be with your spouse! :)

The pinned thread really has so much information -- take a read-through that and hopefully it will help you out :)

Really? The government gives you money if you leave your job with cause (like moving to the US to get married). It's good to get, because money is good and useful.

When you work somewhere not under the table you pay into the EI (Employment Insurance) fund with the government. When you lose your job, or quit, you can now claim EI. You have to have worked a certain amount of hours within a certain amount of time and the amount of EI you get is dependent on what your salary was. You also have to be eligible to work to claim EI. Meaning if you move to the US, but don't have your EAD or Green Card you cant' claim EI.

You also can't claim Canadian EI if you lose an american job.

That is my brief summary of Canadian Employment Insurance :)

Thanks, that's useful.

I'll make sure I claim it when I quit my job.

Oh crud.

I forgot that I "technically" quit my job in March but went back.

I even got the employment record for it.

I wonder if that'll screw me over.

As long as you have worked the required minimum of hours since you went back, I believe you'd still qualify. Cause technically, you have to quit your job 'again'. lol

If you are emigrating - if you quit (without just cause) while you are just living in Canada you can't collect it (just to clarify in case someone reading this doesn't understand that point)

If you quit your job within the last year (the day you apply for benefits minus 52 weeks, that is) you might not qualify ... it would depend on whether or not you would have enough hours to qualify in the time between you quitting your job and applying for benefits. It really doesn't take that many hours to qualify (in some places with high rates of unemployment, you can qualify with only 420 hours!) so I wouldn't worry too much about it :) Also, if you can prove that you had "just cause" for quitting, you could even be able to use those hours ("just cause" is not only restricted to moving to be with your spouse).

Yes, I didn't mean that the way it sounded - I was just clarifying that if you quit to emigrate that's one thing.

If you quit with just cause that is another thing

Not to be silly - but did you really not know what EI is? It's been taken off your paycheque as a deduction since the day you started working in Canada. Perhaps you're the USC qand that's why you weren't aware?

Actually, I don't look at my paychecks except for the final amount and what goes into the vacation pay

There is an EI CONT thing now that I look at one, but I still really wouldn't have know what it was.

I've never really looked into Employment Insurance, since I've never really needed it.

Sorry, my blonde was showing :innocent:
