Can I visit my fiance in the US after filing the petition?

Hi everyone. Me and fiance just got engaged a couple of weeks ago, and we're planning on filing the petition end of this month. I'm from Toronto, and he's from New Jersey.

My question is whether I'm allowed to travel to NJ to visit him after we file the petition and while it's being processed up to before the actual K1 visa is issued? I'm usually the one that goes there, so I'm hoping that immigration won't give me a hard time, since I assume that they have ways to detect that we've filed for the petition through that computer they use to scan my passport through. I'm really nervous about this, since I don't want to buy a plane ticket and get denied of entry.

Also, a second question just popped into my head. Should I just continue to say that I'm visiting my boyfriend? In the past, the immigration officers have actually asked to check my hands for a ring! I'm worried that if I say fiance, that they'll give me an even more difficult time.

Help, please!

Thanks, in advance.

p.s. This site is great. I feel more at ease facing the whole application process. We're not alone! Yay!

I have the same question. What do you tell the at immigration ..... hmmmm

I'm also from Toronto, hubby (we are married with an I130 mailed) lives in Orlando. Mine's a little different since I actually need to travel to Florida for business since my company has an office there. I have a flight out on Saturday to Orlando. Technically I'm going on business, but I've tacked on a week to stay with my hubby. What do I tell immigration? I don't want to lie, but I definately can't be denied access for any reason... My job would suffer if that were the case...

Looking forward to hearing the answer on this one as I fly out on Saturday at 10am

This question gets asked all the time. The answer is "Yes." you can. Just bring plenty of ties to your home country to prove you'll be going back.

As far as what to tell immigration, tell them only what you need to. Answer questions as they're asked, but don't volunteer more information than you need to.

You both can travel to the US, however be advised that they do take a close look at anyone with petition in the system. Ensure you have plenty of evidence proving you need to return to your country of residence.

Letter from employer stating when you are due back at work

Rental agreements

Family ties (children)

Be honest with immigration but like Gwen said answer the question and then shut up. Dont keep talking.

Also alot depends on time you are planning on staying. Having a ticket to return in a few days rather than a 90 day visit.
