Hi,

I'm new to this site and am having quite a hard time figuring out the answers to questions that i have. This site was recommended to me by a friend who knows a friend from Tunisia who used this process succesfully-at least that's what i've been told. First of all i can't figure out who actually runs this site. Is Visa Journey a company? Are you paying money to them? (I'm just wondering as there are ads here for other websites and services). How do you reach them for help. My friend gave me a 800 number to call when i got back to the states, but when i called yesterday the number is no longer in use. Since I don't know who I'm really dealing with I don't know who to ask for from 411. I was also told that when i get back to the states that i will need to pay $800 and then complete my paperwork and send it in. I can't figure out why I was told $800 when i have seen here the list of fees and it says $455 for form I-129F (K1). I'm sorry, I am just so confused and unfortunately I don't have very much time to spend surfing this site-i'm in the middles of moving. Please help!!!!:-)

Thanks,

Shellshoola

Wow. Did you ever receive a whole lot of misinformation. Since it appears you are going for a K-1 visa, I am going to move your post over to that forum. As for the rest....

  • Members at VisaJourney, like yourself, come here to give and request advice. It is not a business so there is no one to pay. The ads are generated by Google and, just like any site on the internet, you can click on each one if you are interested.
  • Start here at The Guides.
  • Also visit US Citizenship & Immigration Services.
Welcome to VJ. :)

Thanks KriKit-

You're right. It seems that I have received a lot of information that was incorrect. I have already looked over many of the guides, but you can see why I was confused. I was told that VJ actually filed for me once I completed some information and that they also helped speed the process along. I was thinking something completely different when I looked at this site based on the information that had been given to me before hand. I was also told that if I did this filing while I was in Algeria with my fiance recently that they would have proof that I filed in Algeria and that that would be more strong evidence of our relationship. I guess that was all for naught. It didn't make sense to me when I was given this information, but i thought I just needed to do a little more clarifying in my understanding and that what i was told would work. Ugghhhh. Looks like I need to start at square 1. Do most of you on here hire lawyers for this or do it on your own. I have heard from friends that the lawyers cost them lots of money without seeing results. Just wondering....

Thanks again....

Hi Shellshoola,

Many members on Visa Journey don't use a lawyer. Some will have an initial consultation with a lawyer and sometimes that is useful, but again not necessary. If you have a straight forward case (no criminal records, no immigration overstays or violations, etc.) then you are probably fine not using a lawyer. Even if you do use a lawyer you end up doing the majority of the work yourself since you two are the ones who have the information and all of the documents. You gather them together and then send them to the lawyer, who is supposed to organize them and then mail them for you. Many times this just adds an extra layer of complexity that isn't really needed. If you take the time to read over all of the instructions carefully, to read the guides here on VJ, to read the information at the USCIS website on bringing a fiance to the US, and asking questions here on VJ then you will probably be perfectly fine.

I have gone all the way through from the K-1 visa to US citizenship and we never once used a lawyer nor did we have any problems. It all depends on how comfortable you feel doing the work yourself and how much money you want to spend in addition to what is required for the actual immigration. If you will feel more comfortable using a lawyer, then use one; if you feel comfortable doing this on your own, then that is fine too.

Visa Journey is completely volunteer. It is a support group of individuals who have gone or are going through family based immigration themselves and are sharing their experiences and their expertise to help others. Welcome aboard.
