Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Founder of Labor Day

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."

But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Husband and I went to church this morning and then stopped by the Mekong (Asian) market. We ended up bringing home a pound of fresh Tilapia. On Labor day, friend of ours celebrating his birthday. We are driving over to Napa to see my Pinay friend and her American husband. :star:

My nephews daughter, she is only 2 1/2 years old ( from husband's side) will undergo brain surgery tomorrow. We were there to visit her today and my heart just goes out to her and the family. She is too young to undergo such a delicate operation.

Please say a prayer for her ( her name is Haley)

Tomorrow is definitely a labor day for me since I will be working.

I hope the surgery goes well for your Haley. She is too young to go under the blade. We will pray for her. Have a wonderful labor day weekend. Don't work too hard.

The Labor Day weekend isn't over yet as we still got Monday for another day of R&R. Have fun everybody!

Thanks. We will. You too.

I was at the North Course at Torrey Pines today but I was unable to break 90. My 10 footer for a birdie on the 18th hole for an 89 broke to the left. I'd swear it should have broken to the right because the ocean is on the right side of the hole. But it's a crazy game, this golf.

My husband played the South Course during the July 4th weekend and he says that the 12th hole ate his lunch. He says that with the prevailing wind coming from the Pacific, the green was impossible to hit in regulation. He carded a triple bogey on that hole!

I concur. The 12th on the South Course is one of the hardest holes in all of San Diego County and a bogey is a good score for the average duffer. And the hole before it, the par 3 11th, is no pushover either at over 200 yards!

My husband remembers the 11th. He says that he bogeyed that hole after his tee shot was trapped in the right side bunker. But then, he birdied the par 5 13th . With the helping tailwind from the ocean, he was within 15 feet of the hole with his third shot and made the putt.

I am slowly learning how to play golf again myself and am looking forward to be my husband’s partner in the forthcoming couples tournament at Rancho Mañana GC. Senór el cordobés, you might be pleased to know that our favorite golfers are your paisanos - Ballesteros, Olazabal and Garcia. ¡Saludos!
