So we all have out favorite movies, which ones did you or will you try to share with your SO?

Me?

Spies like us - She thought it was ok. So much humor is lost in translation.

Hitman - Yet to see it with her

While we've seen a lot of movies together, there are only a few of my favorites that I wanted her to watch and thought she might enjoy. I'll think of more later.

She does enjoy watching MMA (mixed martial arts) with me though, which is good because I'm a huge huge fan. And it always helps that my favorite fighter is a Russian. Fedor Emelianenko. It was funny the first time I showed her one of his fights, she could tell me what his corner was saying in between rounds.

Alla is a big movie goer, so I know we will watch a lot of movies together.

When we met in Kiev, I had brought along a bunch of movies to watch during the cold winter evenings in Kiev.

We ended up watching only three; can't fathom what we did with our time during the other 7 nights we were together

We watched:

Diva

Saturday Night Fever

Casablanca

Plus we caught snippets of other movies poorly dubbed in Ukrainian; only two men and one lady provided all of the voices and emotion was not present. Actually we both were laughing a lot over that.

I have given this one much thought! I told Irina that I went to the new Star Trek movie, and she didn't know what I was talking about. Star Wars she knows about, but she has never heard of Captains Kirk or Picard. Maybe I will give her a crash course, or we will decide it isn't worth it. Don't know either if she will sit through some of my guy favorites, mafia crime drama like the Sopranos or Goodfellas. It came up in conversation that they have Russian remakes of Mary Poppins and Wizard of Oz, so we will probably view the original classics with my kid. I think it would be fun also to watch some some cold war era movies together, such as White Nights or Hunt for Red October.

I also brought along a bunch of DVDs when I visited her, and we did find time to watch a few. The romantic comedies tended to work the best for us. She tried to watch "Arrested Development" with me, but the comedy is so fast-moving and without laugh tracks, she could not keep up. Maybe we will try The Office, or she will talk me into watching my first episode of Friends (she has the whole collection, overdubbed, but wants to try watching them in English). I actually tried The Big Lebowski with her which is one of my favorite cult films, but that was a mistake -- utterly lost in translation. Lastly, I wanted us to watch a Russian movie with English subtitles. I found one called The Italian that was described in Netflix as very beautiful story about an orphan on a journey to find his biological mother. It was really well-made and moving (especially if you sit through to the end, which she did not), but quite bleak. She said that most Russian cinema is fairly depressing in tone.

Still don't understand Star Wars and Star Trek, thought they were the same thing. Sci-Fi is really a Western concept. Princess Bride was well understood. The humour is a little sophomoric so I think that helps.

Whenever I think a movie "must be" watched, she sits through about 20 minutes and then I hear loud Russian language coming from the other room while she talks on the phone. The movies that must be watched in their entirety to be understood she seldom makes it through.

One of the first cult classics she had to watch was A Christmas Story. That should be mandatory for every new immigrant.

She did like The Big Lebowski, actually watched it one day while I was at work. We'll chill out to movies sometimes and she'll sit through some of the funny ones. One thing she watched that shocked the hell out of me was Shoot 'Em Up. Definitely a guilty pleasure movie (I'll watch Monica Bellucci sleep.... Brotherhood of the Wolf, anyone?) but good to watch together. If there's some action, a little romance, and a lot of comedy, she'll make it through. The Big Hit will be next. She kind of liked Shaun of the Dead and watched most of Hot Fuzz with me about five times. Snatch is in the queue.

We watched Willow a few weeks ago. One of my favorite things to say to people while we're out is "Outta the way, peck!" She's now picked that up as well. We used to go to the movies quite a bit but our schedules have changed. Maybe Sunday we'll go although I doubt she'll see Inglorious Basterds. There's always hope.

The Big Lebowski translated pretty well, as did some classics such as Casablanca and Roman Holiday. Army of Darkness not so much.

try translating 'triumph the insult comedy dog" lolololol, she got most of the humor, but not all,she says 'he is rude dog'

and of course that is the point of him...lolololol

she also made me watch admiral,a russian big budgeted movie, google it ,it is like thier saving private ryan, with a love story thrown in there.

and i am saving caddyshack until she understands english alot better than she does.

I'd like to report back that Hitman was a success.

Sure I had to pause it 20 times so I could explain what was going on, but it was worth it.

I always look at the authenticity of the guns in those type of movies.

Geat topic! The Big Lebowski was at the top of the list--makes life worth living...We bought it in Russia, but I seem to recall it was the Eng-lang version...we got it at Gorbushka market. You can watch a Russian-language version online at www.intv.ru (type in English title).

-Annie Hall, Manhattan,Airplane.

-Office Space and Casablanca were watched recently.

Now we have to watch Raising Arizona...don't think he's seen it...A Simple Plan is fun.

The Office (British) on DVD w/Eng subtitles is wonderful.

As far as Russian films...Autumn Marathon, Mimino, Samaya Oboyatelnaya i Privlekatelnaya.

Half that movie took place in Russia. Why did you have to explain anything?

The best line in that movie was when he told her to shut up or he'd put her back in the trunk. Well, that and, "it's not polite to stare." Bond girls rock!

I always look at the authenticity of the guns in those type of movies.

My personal favorite is when they start off the scene with a 9mm and end up with a completely different 45 or something.

I almost forgot - Red Dawn. That movie played a huge roll in my cold war conditioning..... and subsequently required me to do a little investigative work once I came in contact with Russian women. I had to see if they were as bad as they were portrayed to be in the movie. They seemed allright to me!
