Wow...this thread has taken a turn since I last viewed it

I've only been here(US) for about 7 weeks. There have been days where I miss home, but in the end I made a choice. I made a choice to come here & live the rest of my life here. I understand people deal with things differently than others.

I agree. One of the reasons I decided to move to D.C. rather than my wife moving to THIS area is that I know I'm better suited to adapting to new environments than she is. That's NOT a knock against her at all. It's just that my temperament is such that I enjoy big, sweeping changes and fresh starts. Hers isn't. I guess that has to be a major factor in all of these immigration decisions -- one's personal level of adaptability to a new country.

I've been here for over two years now and it's starting to feel like home.

Sure I miss things about Canada, but if I left here there would be a lot of things I would miss about here as well.

Like wawa. I couldn't live without my wawa.

No, I'm serious.

This must be code. Because all I know about Wawa is that it's in Ontario. lol

I'm going to miss a ton of things about where I live now. :(

Where I live in Virginia, I hear a lot more racist, religious, generally discriminatory comments in the work place then I ever did in Canada.....it'd down right offensive and I wish people at my work would realize how offensive it is.

Oh Gawd. That's the area we're moving to.

Wawa is like a convenience store and gas station, except they have like everything. You can get fresh made subs at Wawa, even chicken fingers!

I prefer Wawa milk over any other milk I've had here.

Not to be snotty - but as time passes, you may feel differently. I was pretty ok around 2 months, but things change and evolve. I haven't seen my family in 18 months due to some child issues...I never thought that would happen either :) And yes - I made the choice

Will I feel differently? You're right, I might.

This is how I feel now. I can't offer anything to people that have been here for X amount of years that feel unhappy.

I guess I have differnt views about the whole moving thing......

Which I find a little sad. There are Americans who post here, too.

That's how I felt about Canada. To each their own, I suppose.

If you come in to the Canada forum, from time to time, you are going to hear some not so nice things about America and some Americans - and I hope you don't let it make you feel bad, it's not personal.

What you said above, it's really no different to what others have said here about the U.S. - it's not their home (for a lot of them) - just like you didn't feel Canada was yours.

I agree with this. I am very adaptable as well and moving to be with my husband will sit very well with me. I'll miss my friends and such for sure and I will always be a Canadian and love Canada but I made a choice and I will make the best of it... there is something good everywhere ,I'll make it my job to find it.

I really do wish you all luck and such -- I mean no disrespect but I guess I just hope that as adults we can find happiness where we happen to end is all as where we end up is where we've decided to be.

Meh, unfortunately there are idiots everywhere. Some of the most racist people I ever met were in Montreal. Some of the nicest in Virginia.

I hear what you are saying Trailmix and mostly agree. I try not to take it personally, but as an American I do find the America bashing (not only on VJ but from Canadians I know IRL) a bit sad and can get a bit defensive. I love the US and I love Canada and know that I could be happy living there too. Life is too short otherwise.

I couldn't agree more. All of us here are fortunate to live in two of the greatest nations on this planet. I'm tired of reading America bashing too. I don't think it's even remotely prevalent on VJ...but I come across the sentiment a lot when talking to friends and family, and it annoys me every time. Yes, I'm moving to the U.S. primarily to be with my wife...but if it wasn't such a great nation, and one that I'm going to enjoy living in, I'm positive I would have been a lot more adamant that my wife move HERE. But that's not the case. I love the United States, and I love Canada. I also love New Zealand. All nations have their good and bad traits and their good and bad people...descending into jingoism doesn't change that.

I think to call the original post "America bashing" is not only exaggerating the comment but is also taking it out of context. I think it's perfectly alright for people to feel what they feel. We are not living their lives and so have no background on where they are coming from. People should be able to speak their minds without fear that they will be accused of "bashing" another country. When I say negative things about Canada I don't get accused of bashing it. Sometimes I think that people take things far too personally on this site.

Were you talking about anyone in particular? I certainly didn't think anyone was bashing the other country...

I agree, people need a place to vent and we can't walk on eggshells when we talk about the U.S. just because it makes some people a little uncomfortable, people get homesick and they need a place to share and a lot of people here can relate to what they are saying - it's kind of a normal human thing!

I'm glad I was born in Canada too...and I am grateful for that and had I been born in a 3rd world country - I would be an illegal immigrant. However, the fact that we were born in more prosperous countries, where we have ample food, shelter and big screen TV's does not stop up from sending an undercooked steak back in a restaurant. My point is, while it might be a bit 'ungrateful' at times to do whatever it is we do/say - that too is human nature.

If we are all going to take the high road then we need to shut down the vent thread, we need to 100% stop complaining about wait times at the Montreal consulate - basically we need to stop complaining period.

That's not going to happen.

Perhaps bashing was a bit strong, but I wasn't refering to the original post but replying to Trailmix and her statement that when you come to the Canada forum you are going to hear some not nice things about America and some Americans. I also said that it wasn't just a VJ issue but from people I know in the real world. I have no problems with people speaking their minds and lord knows I have my own criticisms of the US and Canada. I just find it sad that there are some people who are so unhappy with where they live, beyond the normal homesick, I miss my friends and family, I can't find decent bread, everything has HFCS in it, and Americans think I live in an igloo and drive my sled dogs to work.

Shoot, I am still bitter that I can't find decent bagels, pizza or Chinese food in the entire commonwealth of Virginia and I have lived here for 15 years!
