SSN help needed

Hi all,

i arrived in the States on a K1Visa on June 5-06 I was married on the 28June. On the 7th July i went in to my local SSOffice in Philly to apply for my SSN, (there they insisted it was actually a SSCard not SSNumber). I was informed that before i could apply for a SSN, i first needed to adjust my status. This was news to me and i later contacted the SSN help line to verify what i had been told earlier was correct, unfortunately all they told me was to visit my local SSOffice and discuss it with them, (and then they hung up on me).

So my questions are: is that right that i need to file my AOS and have it processed before applying for my SSN?, or if not,has anybody out there had a similiar problem and how did you sort it out?

You definately should have been able to apply for your SSN. Have a look for post by (or contact directly) the user mdyoung. He is very knowledgeable about the SSN process and has made numerous posts answering questions similar to use. Also look in the "Working & Traveling prior to getting a Green Card" forum for more posts about this topic

No matter what they told you, you still have to go your local office anyway. You can only apply for your SSN in person. Good luck!

I'm assuming you are the husband, and the immigrant. If that is correct, you should have been able to obtain a SSN as you are within your 76 days of your I-94.

This thread will probably be moved, as it does not belong on this forum. Do as another poster suggested, and contact mdyoung, or he may just reply on his own.
