Hi all,

I'm concerned about the recent outbreak of Swine Flu in South Africa...my fiancee will be traveling from Cape Town to the US in the next few days.

I have asked her to call the embassy...her dr...and maybe the airport as well to see if there will be any restrictions on travel. Any other recommendations? Has anyone here experienced issues at the airport related to swine flu?

Nino

I would think if she has the swine flu she should not travel. But if she does not have it then she should be good to go..

I can only tell you about my experience travelling from China during the height of SARS. They had those laser temperature gages set up all over the airport. Anyone who read high according to the gage was pulled aside and given a more accurate test of temperature. If they had a fever, I presume they were not allowed any farther into the airport. I never heard of anyone being barred from entry, but presumably it happened. This would be a very good thing in terms of protecting your fiancee from getting on a plane with an infected passenger. I don't know if this is being done, however. I had a 13 hour layover in Paris on that trip and left the airport, and there was nothing like that there. Nor was there anything like that in Benin, my final destination.
