Hi,

I've looked over the k1 guide here, and searched the forum and I must be passing by the answer somewhere.

I understand that once the visa is in hand there are 6 months to use it to enter the states, but...

Once the consulate receives the info from nvc, and mails it to the beneficiary.. how soon does the beneficiary have to respond back with the properly filled out forms?

What kind of range of time can one stretch the whole process out over without going over any limits?

Also, I'm leery of sending my original birth certificate overseas, is this what other k1ers are also doing for their fiance to take it to the interview?

thanks,

S.

The NOA2/Approval Notice technically expires after 4 months - while the Embassy/Consulate can and often does extend this period, they aren't likely to do so simply because the beneficiary hasn't responded back. So if you do nothing - they can consider it abandoned. Presumably once the expiration date on your NOA2 passes.

Also, I'm leery of sending my original birth certificate overseas, is this what other k1ers are also doing for their fiance to take it to the interview? I did not send my original BC (as the USC) - the copy already submitted was fine.

Are you anticipating a delay in responding to the Embassy/Consulate's package? (Or trying to stretch out the time?)

Unlike a liscense it is not against the law to carry more than one birth certificate. If you are concerned about not having a copy in your possesion then you can get a new one from your registry office so that you do not have to without. The alternative is going to the interview and bringing your birth certificate with you. It's my udnerstanding that the consulate does not keep the birth certificate only looks at it and then returns it with your other documents.

I don't know about wait times between receiving the packet 3 and sending it but you can definatly call or e-mail the consulate and it's my understanding that they will give you more time if necessary. You also do not have to book your interview for asap. You can book it farther into the future. I don't believe there is a deadline where that is concerned. But yes the 6 months is correct.
