Read this in another posting. Many Vietnamese, especially Vietnamese Catholics, meet their spouses through other people introducing. It's a lot safer than meeting someone on the street, especially since you marry your spouse, you marry her family too. Is it true that HCM considers this a red flag?

I can't answer your question but I met my fiance through family members ... to be exact ... my father is married to a filipina ... they gave my yahoo to her and gave me hers last year and we fell madly in love ... my fathers wife and my fiance are first cousins ... so I assume getting introduced by family members makes them look a little more into your case but I would assume they are trained well enough to see a real relationship so I wouldn't worry to much if this is the case for you and your SO ... good luck to us all !

Yes its a red flag because they think its a fraud relationship until proven otherwise... Its a shame that they look at some customs (Dam Hoi) as a cultural requirement, but when the family finds a spouse and introduces them, they frown on that initially even though its customary in many areas..

The trick is to get plenty of proof to document that it is a "real" relationship

yes, it is one of many potential red flags at the HCM consulate. Just be prepared to document it well, be sure to provide a list of relatives she might have in the US and be certain that the story she tells about your introduction and first meeting exactly match what you may include in your timeline.
