Hi all;

I've read through multiple posts about name changing in various situations, with AOS, during the CR-1 application process, etc., etc., but couldn't find anything to address our specific situation.

Here's my question:

My wife has gone through the CR-1 process, received her visa, and already immigrated at the POE and is living in the US now. She wants to start using my last name as her own, but we don't know what we need to do to make that happen.

Where can we start? All of her documents have her maiden name - the marriage certificate, the visa (green card), passport, etc. So, what is the first step? The next step after that?

Any direction or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much in advance!!

There is no hard and fast rule to changing your maiden name to your married name.

The marriage certificate should have her maiden name on it - so that is not something you would change.

The name on her passport cannot be 'changed' as such, she will need to get a new passport.

For everything else, you need to contact each business separately and notify them of her name change, they will let you know if you need to send in a form etc.

I have ordered my Social Security card in my married name. I just took my marriage certificate and passport with visa in it. When my husband added me to his credit card he just called the company and asked them to add me.

Not sure about DL, as I am waiting for SS card before I go there.

Good luck

Janet

My understanding is that to change the name on the GC before it's time for renewal, is that it costs $390.00. Personally, I'd wait until that needs renewal, then apply for everything else around that same time.
