Hello everyone. i have been reading the Russia forum a lot, but rarely posting. We finally got our NOA2 on Thursday and are now preparing for the rest of the journey. Oksana lives in Novosibirsk and is not too familiar with Moscow. I was wondering if anyone could help us find an inexpensive hotel in the area. She'll have to be there for a few days since she is going to have her medicals done at the same time. Any advice would be helpful.

Hello everyone. i have been reading the Russia forum a lot, but rarely posting. We finally got our NOA2 on Thursday and are now preparing for the rest of the journey. In case you weren't aware, average nightly hotel rates in Moscow are among the most expensive in the world. So "inexpensive" is a very relative term. If you do some google searches over the next few days I'm sure you can come up with some general idea of prices in Moscow and find some relatively good values.

Some specific suggestions---

If you want a western hotel chain, take a look at the various Holiday Inn properties in Moscow. They are currently offering rates around $135 a night, which for that type of hotel in Moscow is VERY good! Occasionally you might find a deal with one of them that gives you an even better rate.

Another popular option are the various Izmailovo hotels in Moscow -- Alpha, Gamma-Delta, Vega. It's a cluster of hotels on the northern edge of the city. They're a little further out, more "old Soviet" style hotels, but they are not bad. While they are a bit far from the city center they are right on the metro line, so the ride into the center of the city is only about 20 minutes. The rates for these hotels varies, but plan on about $80-100 a night for a decent room.

I'm sure you'll get other suggestions over the coming days. Just take those suggestions, keep searching yourself, and you'll eventually come up with a good solution that fits the situation (if not your budget).

Good luck with the rest of the Journey!

I am going back soon and will use www.apartmentres.com. I like having a kitchen. You can choose based on size, style or part of town. They will take you to and from the airport for reasonable fare (for Moscow), stock groceries if you want, and unlimited international calling is included. I did not look at many other options, but was happy with this one.

Check http://www.russiangirlfriday.com and have your girl send this girl a message. She offers her place to crash for like $35 a night and can assist with directions, etc. About the best deal you're going to find in Moscow.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am aware that Moscow is extremely expensive. I was hoping some others may have known of some hidden gems. It is early still and we have plenty of time to look.

Luba and her friend just stayed at a 'reasonable' and nice (their description) hotel in Moscow for 4 nights for a little over $400 (3 nights @85; 1 @95 plus 18% VAT). That was for business twin during the high season. A regular twin room through August is running 67 or 61 per night plus VAT tax. In September, when you will most likely have the interview they are running 74 or 82 per night. Fri-Sun lower rate. I paid for it ahead of time with my credit card and they didn't charge the card until three days before arrival. Before that you can cancel with no charge, or even make changes if needed. Initially I began an email correspondence where all my questions were answered.

It's in the NW part of Moscow four stops from Kazinski rail station. Maybe 7 or 8 stops to the embassy area. Luba used IOM, closest to embassy and was pleased with the staff. It is also one day service.

If you want PM me and I can email you some great maps and photos showing the metro system and how to get from the hotel to the embassy area.

Stayed at Izmailovo last year. Not bad for $100/night. The room was clean and fully functional, but no internet. Less than 10 minutes from the metro and there's a market nearby as well as a couple reasonable cafes.

I already emailed RGF for our return leg in August.

My wife is also from Novosibirsk. We've used Moscow Rick for both visa trips (K1 and then K3) and then again for two subsequent trips to the city. We've been quite pleased with his service. His rates are fair. Moscow *is* expensive.
