He will have to have his naturalization certificate first. Beyond that, it's just some paperwork, photos, a fee and a wait.

On the day of the oath he will get his naturalization certificate. Usually after the ceremony they hand out forms for getting your passport. He can send in his application that day, and however long it usually takes for the passport (2 weeks??).

Preferred downloading the DS-11 form and filling it out with Acrobat so all the printing is clear and legible. Took digital photos of my wife according to the instructions, and using my computer photo program, resized them to put six on a 4 by 6, sent that to Walgreens and paid 19 cents for six of them. Called for an appointment with our city clerk the morning after her oath ceremony, and all this was done in advance. Nine days later she had her passport and everything was correct. Did scan her certificate and printed out copies the night before, need that in case the DOS loses your certificate.

Her green card was taken and her foreign passport was rendered useless, at least for coming back. Can make an appointment at one of the twelve service centers if you already have plane tickets, for us would be a 700 mile round trip. We had the choice of either our city clerk or post office for the application, but knew our city clerk was the most competent so used her.b Always a line at the post office, I hate lines.
