Hello,

I'm new here. I just wanted some advice from people who have been on both sides. Here's my situation I'm going through the K-1 process and our interview is soon. My concern is that my fiance is VERY nervous to leave his home country, which he has never left before. He's assured me he is going to come, but he just gets scared. I know this is a big move for him and I just wanted to know what, if anything, I can do to help him.

Thanks and good luck to everyone for a speedy journey.

I think that happens all the time.

Umit is getting the "scares" now since we are getting closer to the "I-Date".

Not to worry - hang in there and help them through it.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

That happens sometimes. Just talk with him. What is it that he is a afraid of? One thing in particular or many? You can discuss them with him, acknowledging that some of those things are difficult/scary and maybe suggestion solutions or alternative ways of looking at the situation.

Otto, he's from the Bahamas

Bobby, thanks for sharing your fiance's fears too. Sometimes I get selfish and feel like it's about me and that he's changing his mind about marrying me, eventhough he's said over and over that he can't wait to marry me, it's just that he's cared to leave his country. I know it's a HUGE change and I truly feel bad for him.

As far as what he's afraid of he said he is worried about leaving his family and friends. I did tell him that I don't blame him and that I wouldn't want to move away from everyone/everything I know and that we will visit a lot.

Thanks for the support guys. Anyone have any experience from someone that was nervous, but is here now?

My husband wasn't very nervous, but I tried to find other people with similar interests or from his country that we could hang out with when he got here. I didn't have very much to do when he first got here which helped a lot since I could show him how to drive in the US, help him get all his documents sorted, show him around the area. I also looked into activities he likes. I got him a gym membership and found a place for him to go play soccer.

I think one of the hardest parts of the move is when they first get here and the novelty wears off. They don't have any friends yet, they can't work yet and you have to work to support your new family. Look ahead to what activities you can find for them to get involved in to meet people and stay busy until they can work. I know for my husband it was especially tough not being able to work since he always has. If you an arrange for any family or friends to visit a few months after they move that help since it's something to look forward to.
