In the case of the Bangkok embassy, they ask you to pick up the visa 3 business days after you are approved at the interview. Does anyone know the exact reason behind this wait? It seems like they could print it up in an hour.

AOS: 08/08/2009 (mailed I-485, I-765, & I-131) - 10/29/2009 (received GC)

There are probably some extra processing steps they need to do before issuing the visa. Plus, they probably have many many visas to print.

Just be patient, you are almost done :)

Actually I'm asking the question purely out of curiosity. I don't really mind the wait at this point.

It's because they are putting the "magical popcorntm" in the envelope they will give you with the visa.

That takes time!

Congrats btw :)

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

An officer there told me it was " the computer time required to enter the visas info". I think they are just that busy most of the time & give themsleves enough time to make sure it is done when they say it will be.

Count your blessings about not having to deal with Ecuador.

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

They have to enter the info in the system (which the lady at Auckland told us doesn't always co-operate well).

They also have to prepare the envelope that you give CBP at the border, and type up the actual visa sticker.

At the Lao embassy in Bangkok, it usually took a few days for a tourist visa. However, when I greased the fella's palm with a crisp 1,000 Baht bill ($25 at that time), I got it in a couple of hours.

And a question less tied to curiosity and more related to reality:

Has anyone ever heard of a case where the embassy has reversed its approval decision and not granted a visa even though the applicant was told to pick up the visa on a specific date? I know the embassy usually says not to make any travel plans until the visa is in your hand, but is there any reason at all that I should not expect the visa to be in my fiancee's hands on the date indicated on the card she was given? We would like to book tickets in advance for a number of reasons.

You've been very fortunate with your Fiance Application, Your "Timeline" is Unbelievable!!

I'm going on 90 Days & have yet to recieve the NOA2 & many other members have waited much longer, than myself.

Congrats!!

In extreme cases, embassies can revoke visas. (This is likely VERY rare indeed.) Regarding your other question, mechanical difficulties can interfere, such as printer problems (printing the visa); personnel problems (an unusual number of staff out sick); official holidays; civil unrest; DHL problems if the visa is to be shipped; etc. It's probably prudent to allow yourselves a couple of days' cushion, rather than planning to fly out immediately after the visa has been promised (unless your plane reservations are changeable with no or little penalty).
