please keep in the Cdn forum....

Hi guys - just wondered how anyone has handled this. I don't have a DL but I assumed it was the same as my VA State id.

My state id has an expiry date that matches the expiry date on my 2 yr GC - so while I'm waiting to have the conditions removed later this yr and I get the perm GC how do I handle the fact that my state id will expire? Do I take in the NOA and show it as proof of a 1 yr extension and then subsequently take the PERM GC in once I receive it?

I was just curious whether anyone had any trouble or is it something the DOT handles smoothly?

My drivers license is set to expire 90 days AFTER my green card expires. ( I believe its the 28th of December it will expire as my greencard expires Sept. 28th)

Hopefully by the time I sent my forms in, I will get my new green card between June 28th and December 28th...or..i may be SOL.

hmmf - hopefully you won't be SOL , I shall cross my fingers for you - i just have visions of stupidity at VDOT !

It made me think harder about whether I want to try for my beginners before I get the PERM GC - just to avoid the hassle

I know when my greencard expired, and my drivers license was coordinated with it. When I took in my letter extending my "greencard" for 1 more year, it was no problem, they gave me a 1 yr drivers license at a prorated rate! Then i screwed up,lol a year later----- my drivers license expired and i forgot! So for like 1.5 months drove around with no (expired)drivers license!! they could have made me start back at square 1--including written and road test and loose my Motorcycle endorsement!! But they took pity on me and juts gave me another.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I got my DL at the end of Sept '08. It doesn't expire until Jan '13. My 2 yr GC expires on April 8, 2011. Go figure - IL has it's own set of rules. :unsure:

April 13, 2009 - Welcome to the USA letter rec'd. PRC to be rec'd within 3 weeks.

April 16, 2009 - 2 yr GC rec'd in mail.

March 2, 2011 - Mailed in I-751 to CSC

March 4, 2011 - I-751 delivered to CSC

March 4, 2011 - NOA issued

March 12, 2011 - NOA received

April 14, 2011 - BIO Appt 5/6/11

May 6, 2011 - BIO done in 10 minutes...no re-takes this time :)

June 27, 2011 - Email rec'd "Status - Approved"

July 1, 2011 - 10 yr GC arrived

My wife and I actually just went in to get the conditions removed from her GC and they just let us know to keep her GC and the notice that it's getting processed together and it will work just fine. We even went to visit her family this weekend and it worked just fine.

My wife has been back since June 5, 2007. Now we're just livin' man, L I V I N :)

I went to the DMV on Gallows road in Fairfax and they didnt question the letter at all that extended my greencard for 1 year! In and out in like 10 minutes--was painless
