Second quote (from North American Van Lines) came in at $3800 US!! YIKES!! They estimated less poundage and it was $1000 more than Atlas. I can't imagine that the service could be that different, they are both well known companies.

Wow, yes, seems to be very expensive to ship with a moving company.

I'm thinking I will go with Atlas - even at $2800 it's not cheap. My most prized possession is my treadmill, what could go wrong with that?

I had 15 boxes I packed into my fiances Grand Prix and drove it cross country! I figured that we could save $2,000+ if I just downsized. I also saw it as an excuse to buy new stuff! I'm not going to lie, most of my furniture was from walmart and I've been sleeping on a futon for 6 years :P. We have a new queen sized bed and I'm living it up...

But from Niagara to Jersey? That's not even that far! I can't believe those prices. Honestly, moving companies are so crooked.

OBX- is it you or your SO that is from Niagara? I miss my dingy town. I need someone to cry with.

I moved from Welland. (Not originally from there, moved there with my first husband who was from Niagara Falls) My older son is at Brock and the youngest is off to Laurier.

I actually liked living in Welland! (Who ever admits that!) I have to make two more trips back before the house is packed up but I know I will miss it.

What do they actually do for you for the $2800? Do they come in and pack everything for you as well - or is this purely picking up your 'already packed' stuff and putting it in a truck and unloading it at your new place?

I don't even want to see the "We'll pack for you price"!! This is only for loading and transporting and unpacking my furniture and whatever boxes are left that I can't squeeze into my last load. It is based on the weight of the load and distance to the destination. I just can't understand why such a difference between the two companies.

Yes, for us it was basically picking up all of our packed stuff, although I did have them pack my antique good china - figured if it broke i could have an insurance claim - loading up the truck (carrying everything down stairs), transporting it across the border and taking care of the customs stuff (I faxed them back a copy of my I-94 and processed K-1), and unloading it at its new location. We just had everything stored in the garage but if you wanted they would move the various boxes into the appropriate rooms of the new place.

Interestingly, the moving van that brought our stuff was carrying two additional loads along with ours - one stop was on the north side of Atlanta, we were on the south side of Atlanta and their third stop was in Savannah. One person was on a work visa and one was a returning American. I thought it very interesting that they had 3 people from the same part of Ontario moving to the same part of the US in the same week.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Well - just a thought here - have you looked at Upack - done a quote?

We also did not want to pack and unpack our relocube. So what we did was have them deliver the relocube to our house in Calgary and we hired movers to pack it for us that day.

Then when we had it delivered here in Lake Mary, I just advertised on craigslist and had 2 students come and unpack it for us.

I did read up on Upack but I've decided to be lazy and forego anymore arranging, phone calls, estimates etc. The sale of my house in this depressed market wore me out. I had three months of constant home viewings and open houses before it finally sold. Now I just want to be done with it. Of course when I see my VISA bill next month I will probably kick myself! :bonk:

I would have preferred to move with a company like UPack rather than stuffing my life into 2 car loads, mine and my fiance's, but I guess I do need to downsize somewhat, mainly in the clothing dept most likely. I can't decide if I want to take all my university books and binders, I feel like I have been lugging them around, but I paid so much money for them! I don;t have any furniture as its all in NE, dishes and stuff too from when we lived together, our apartment is a mish mash of new and old stuff and furniture that is mine and his.

If only I had a family member that had a minivan! That would be perfect size for me to move all of my belongings!

It would also be nice if ABF U Pack had service in SK!! Every website I check there is a big black hole on the map when it comes to SK, or shall I say white as the rest of the provinces are colored!

Hi there :) Minnew,

I got rid of my textbooks - sold some, gave some away, donated some. I did save all my papers - I am not sure but just in case. Does PODS service Saskatchewan they are like Upack more expensive but a bigger container and more insurance coverage.

 I worked at the Tim Hortons down by the tunnel for years and everyone would come for coffee after their walmart runs. I'd always see cars with back seats full of walmart bags... Its the hot spot for shopping!

Minniew- I threw away all my old university notes. I had an entire garbage bag full, it was ridiculous. I had been lugging them around and I never once went to them for answers to questions or for resources, so I figured there was no point in keeping everything. Plus, my last 2 years of notes are all typed up into my laptop anyways, so If I ever really needed them I could just search into the old archives. As far as textbooks go, I sold what I could, gave away some, and boxed most of them up and left them in my parents basement for storage for a while. Its hard to throw away thousands of dollars of books even if you don't think you'll ever need them again.

I was pretty upset with having to pack my whole life into my fiance's car, but I was actually surprised how much I could fit! After I finished giving away all the things I didn't want, I fit everything I had into the car aside from 2 boxes of things I don't really need right now. My parents have a lot of extra space in my absence so they agreed to store anything I wanted to leave laying around.

ARggh looked up PODS and they don't have service in my area, or won't deliver to the area I am moving! The site said try U-Pack...I already did!

Its going to be hard to part with my textbooks and stuff, out of all the stuff I have its probably the most I am attached to...which is weird. I only kept the textbooks "core" to my major. Downsizing here I come! I found a bunch of boxes of stuff at my bedroom door this morning...more stuff to sort through that my mom found! Yearbooks...awards...paperwork....oh so much to do!! :crying:
