Hello Canadians!

I am going to visit my fiance on June 13th for two weeks (woo hoo!). I want to give him the $275 for his medical exam, and the $131 for the filing fee. My question is, should I give it to him in USD or CAD? Will he need a money order or a check? If I give him cash, is it a big deal to get a money order or a check? He has a bank account that is soley in USD along with his regular Canadian bank account.

Thanks!

The medical exam fee is Canadian dollars, the filing fee is U.S. dollars.

For the medical, he can just take cash if he wants to, for the filing fee:

Individuals applying for U.S. visas at Consulates in Canada must first deposit the fee to the Bank

The deposit slip for your visa application fee consists of 3 pages. A separate set of deposit slips is required for each applicant. Take all three pages of the deposit slip(s) to any branch of Scotia Bank and pay the non-refundable U.S. visa application fee of US$131.00. The payment must be made in either US$ cash, a US$ certified check or a US$ money order; incoming mail deposits and wired deposits are not accepted. The bank teller will stamp all three copies of your receipt and should return two copies to you. You must submit two validated deposit receipts with your visa application.

The special pre-coded deposit slip can be downloaded from the link provided below. Deposit slips can also be obtained by calling (900) 451-2778, or as part of the appointment process at www.nvars.com or in person at any U.S. Consulate. The Consulate cannot accept applications that do not contain two copies of your deposit receipt.

Hello!

Medical is in CAD. Filing fee is in USD. I don't think they accept personal cheques, I'd give cash.

Have a great visit!

Wow! Thanks for all of the quick replies! USD cash it is! I just hope he doesn't end up having to pay more in CAD for his medical if the USD keeps going down!

Thanks trailmix for the links to the deposit slips!

Your Cdn fiance is having the medical done by a Cdn doctor - cash is best probably and he'll have no problems exchanging it at his Cdn bank if he needs to.

Hope that helps.

Personally I haven't had a problem cashing an American money order in Canada either so either works.

I think I had read this somewhere too (do you have a link childress?)

So I guess this means they can pay beforehand at the bank or they can pay at the consulate?

I think the Vancouver Consulate requires the Scotiabank receipt way and Montreal Consulate is cash only, $131. Don't quote me on the Vancouver info... but Montreal is 100% correct at $131 US cash only.

Yep you are right! There are 3 Pre-Printed deposit slips on the Vancouver Consulate website, once they are stamped at Scotiabank the bank keeps 1 of those slips and the Vancouver Consulate gets the other two on the day of the interview.
