Employment Issues

I recently got into a squabble with my Step-Father that because in the two years since I've graduated University, I've not really held down a worthwhile job (since I've been flittering between America and the UK and my work at a temp agency allows me to do that.) and that this will work against me in applying for the K-1 Visa. And if not then, then in the possibility of actually looking for employment in the USA.

My Fiancee and I are going to send off all the Visa forms and I'm continuosly worried about it simply because I desperatly want to be in the US with the woman I love and all the friends I've made there, so it's become a kind of heightened paranoia for me. Will my prior employment history affect my K-1 Visa chances?

I wouldn't think so, if you make less than the poverty guideline's limit, you should get a co-sponsor, and that will be the weight for her visa interview.

If I read this correctly you are the UK citizen being brought over? If that is the case you'll be fine. It's your fiancee's employment and salary that will be looked at as she sponsors you coming over. You will fill in an employment section on the 325 form (you both fill one of these out) but it's more for background checks/general information. They aren't looking to see if you've held down a stellar job for xxx number of years.

10/07/2006 WEDDING DAY!

11/14/2006 AOS packet made it to 'the box' after being overnighted.

12/02/2006 Paul had biometrics

12/14/2006 AOS Forwarded to CSC AND AP Application approved.

01/17/2007 First touch of 2007 at CSC

01/20/2007 Touched AGAIN (also the 18th) come on...

February: Oops, RFE for a REGISTERED marriage certificate. Oops! Overnighted it.

02/28/2007 Paul gets email letting us know his GREENCARD is on it's way! It's done...for now!

03/09/2007 Paul's greencard arrives. And breathe...

We began with mailing the I-129 in on February 27, 2006 so the whole process took us approx. one year.

Good luck out there!

Fantastic! *Does a little dance*

Hey, is that Spaced in your avatar, Joey?

Yes it is. :) I was just saying on the Brit forum that Spaced and Black Books are the UK comedy musts in response to someone's question.

Your employment history won´'t make any difference now, but be sure to know about employment opportunities here. It all depends on which state/city you come to and what your education and experiences are - do not expect too much and be prepared to start at the bottom if need be and you will be OK. Also, be aware that you may not be able to work for a while as your EAD gets processed (unless you come through JFK and get the EAD stamp.) Finances can be tight, especially in the beginning - so be ready to eat lots of hamburgers, beans and rice! Wish you the best

Being prepared for a delay and the survival conditions will be best for your mental well-being so you do not end up expecting too much and getting little or nothing in the beginning.

Hope for the best for you and yours

Very true there Motu! We are very tight at the moment....but we both know it's a temporary situation. Thankfully our needs are not so much, as we enjoy being at home. Best of luck to you both!
