Timelines seem to have sped up, so don't be surprised if you see an approval in July. :)

It is a crappy process, for sure. But one day you're going to look back on it, and it won't seem that bad. Easy to say right now, I know, but true. In the meantime, get to know each other better and write as much as you can to prepare her for her new life here. Good luck!!

I am in the same boat, but I will say that it has been much better getting to know each other while waiting. Its certainly not ideal, but what choice do we have? I am developing patience I never thought I was capable of.

Mox's comments are right on. The time does seem to be flying along. We Skype regularly, talk on the phone regularly and are doing our part in keeping the text message system working!!

I ask her for any questions she may think of and if I can not describe it over Skype or the phone, I take pictures and send an email with description. For example, over the weekend we discused my house's central air furnance and air conditioning. She was concerned that it would be too windy and noisy like a hotel AC unit. I took pictures of the furnance, the AC, the ductwork, and the registers. "Heat, even in the toilet???" Her apartment is heated by recirculating hot water and of course she doesn't have control of the temperature.

I also have taken photos of the gas station, the bank, the preschool, the food markets, the tollroad, everything, so that she has some visual picture of what she is coming to.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

Or use your time wisely and do everything you enjoy doing now that you won't be able to do after her arrival. Also, eat junk food. Lots and lots of junk food. Reflect on how nice it is to sit there and enjoy your greasy, delicious American fare without someone telling you how horrible it is.

My wife thought it amazing when she first arrived that there were dead animals all along the side of the road and that there were so many of them! "Why govt. doesn't pay money for someone to clean it up?" She also couldn't believe we had ducks and geese in the parks. "In Russia you never see goose swimming in park. Somebody will be take and eat for dinner. Goose so very delicious. Why American people not do this?"

I know your tongue is planted at least somewhat firmly in cheek, but if you have to change your lifestyle too dramatically when she arrives, then you're going to have problems. If your idea of a great Friday night is sitting at home watching NASCAR with a bucket of KFC, she needs to know that (and accept it) before she arrives, and you shouldn't feel like you have to change that routine. Nothing should ever be a major surprise. The little surprises are fun though. :)

You might want to let her know too that the birds are probably toxic as hell from eating all the run-off chemicals and ####### they pick up.

no .....no nascar....but football season is a different story.go falcons!!!!!!!.and she knows all that i am into,i actually welcome the change from ####### food(i eat out alot)to good homecooked food.the only real difference is i won't be on call 24/7 to come into work.and my boss knows that once we are married,my on call times will change.

and i am not worried about birds as much as r-a-b-i-e-s.marina tries to make friends with the stinky opossum under the deck,or a seemingly innocent looking raccoon,i am afraid she will learn about 18 shots to the stomache......is it still 18 shots there?

Now there's a good Friday night! My wife LOVES KFC. NASCAR, not so much.

Well, that and the whole legality of capturing, cooking and eating a bird from the park.

but football season is a different story

My wife took two full seasons to realize that Sunday was pretty much a holiday every weekend from late August til February. She gets it now though. "Probably you will be watch your stupid football. I will be go to za mall whis my friend and spend all of your money, blat." All I heard was "I won't be interrupting you during the game. Have fun."

My wife loves NASCAR. We watch every weekend. We go to Daytona and Homestead. Kind of embarrassing at the track when the wife jumps up on her chair and screams for her favorite driver, and then tells the big Bubba sitting in front of her that his driver is "idiot" for bumping her guy. I'm not joking about this.

She knows all about my love of Hockey. I subscribe to NHL Center Ice so I can watch every game of the Red Wings. I always DVR the game and watch it in an hour or less - no commercials, no commentary, etc. If it's a blowout or they are down by a couple I just skip forward. Some games I can watch in 20 minutes! I don't watch any of the popular sports with the exception of a few golf tournaments. Again, those are recorded and watched at a much faster pace. Every day when we talk she asks me if I will see any hockey today. She also says after she arrives we can watch hockey when friends visit. That's OK with me. I'll ditch Center Ice and just DVR NHL on the Fly and catch the highlights of each Red Wing game. I'll pick up the full game whenever they are on Vs. or NHL network. But next playoff season will have to be negotiated.
