Change of address...driving across POE

 Share

We may be living with family temporarily until we settle into our new place, and even our new place is not 100%

Should I change my address when I cross to where we will be staying? It may only be a few weeks?

Also if we end up staying with family for a few months, and then want to change our address while we have already filed for AOS, how easy is this to do? And does it delay the application process? It may be in a different State too, as we live in the State line.

When I drive across, should I just leave address as is, as this is where we will likely stay for at least first month for sure, then move, and I file a change once we marry and file our AOS?

Does it look bad if we change our address so soon after filing for AOS if this is when we move?

Sorry, I'm a little confused....but I'm sure in this economy, they are seeing many people, move/relocate etc....

I cross Friday....

Thanks guys :)

Poprocks, all I can say about changing your address during the AOS process is that it is strongly advised against.... you can probably search that on the AOS forum but I've read many times people suggesting NOT to change address while AOS is pending. Yes, it should work but apparently alot of the time it doesn't get down the line to the person adjudicating the file and it's a heck of a time trying to get your EAD/AP/GC..... so if there's any way you can keep the same address during the whole process, that's a good thing.... I know that's not always possible for people, as yes they move! And it's possible it would work, but I just heard it doesn't work too well.... Anyway, not sure what to suggest in this case.... Is there a chance you can put say your in-laws address or something that may live nearby, to be safe? Just so you're not changing while AOS is processing... Then, when GC is received and you're done with USCIS for a few years you can safely submit a change of address form....

I wouldn't worry about changing your address. At least you know your papers, cards, all immigration info will be going to a safe residence. Until you have an absolute permanent residence (ie. buy a house, rental agreement for a year) then don't worry about it. From what I've read it's been proven to be more of a hassle than anything.

Good luck!

Ok, the address we have already filed with, is where we will be staying a short time. However, we do own the property, registered to my fiancé and will continue owning it. This us where I have forwarded my Canadian mail. When we do move, it will be up the road.

If we get called in for an interview, this is when we will need proof, right? If we show up to interview with all our proof, and it is for our new address, will they be ok with this? As long as all our stuff is together? Or will they get annoyed that we did not advise them of the change?

Thanks Jill!

Trailmix, I'm suprisingly not nervous at all?! I'm very excited! I think the nervousness will kick in as I'm pulling up to the POE.

So Jill Lewiston is 24 hours? We are crossing around 6am :)

This is the grey area - you are technically required by law to change your address with USCIS. BUT, they are incompetent sometimes and address changes don't get through when a case is pending. So, if you do change it halfway through, your important mail could get sent back (i.e. your biometrics appt) but if you don't, and go to the interview armed with evidence you moved, they may ask why you didn't change you address...

but yes the interview is when you will need proof, let's hope you don't get called for an interview :D

You got it girl! 24/7, I arrived there 5am and it was easy as pie. Good idea to go early, so you don't have to sit around waiting.

That's good! With us I wasn't nervous or excited really - strangely though, after we did the whole visa thing and we were driving away from the POE - we both felt rather relieved and elated.

Then I remembered we were only in Montana :hehe:

So is the problem with receiving mail? Cause what if we have access to both addresses and even have them forwarded?this way whether or not they change the address, it still gets to us? Or are there other admin issues it will cause?

It sounds like you'll be fine!! If you have access to both addys and you're having mail forwarded, then you'll get the mail either way! Don't worry about interview proof until you cross that bridge, you may not even have an interview so take it one step at a time :D

Good point. I think you're right. If you change it and they don't process it properly, it will jsut go to the old address on the file... but if you have access to that address too, then I don't think you need to worry.

Good luck with the move!!! I'll be thinking of you!

The change of address is a simple online thing and as everyone else has already advised you, because you can get email from your first address, then don't worry. Know as well that the forms ask for both a mailing and a living (?) address so if you are going to be moving around a fair bit, just keep your mailing address consistent. Thinking back on this now, I think we also used my hubby's dad's address as a mailing address for a while.
