What is the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?

someone told me yesterday.. Memorial day is for the dead veterans and Veterans Day is for the living vets.

That is interesting. I always thought it was the same because Veterans Day is Nov. 11, same as Remembrance Day. And we honour living as well as dead. "Lest we never forget"...

They come from different historical wars.

Memorial Day dates back to the Civil War.

Veterans Day (also Remembrance Day in Canada, or Armistice Day in France) is Nov 11, because World War I ended with the armistice on this day in 1918. It was "the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" when the guns finally fell silent.

Since Memorial Day was already observed in the US, it remained. But Armistice Day was celebrated by all the Allied nations that participated in WWI, including the US. Veterans Day is not a statutory holiday in the US, whereas Memorial Day is.

Hey E .... I was in CT this weekend and went to a Memorial Day parade in West Haven yesterday. Did you go to any?

Are you serious? :) that's hilarious! We went on a hike in Haddam, so we didn't see any parades unfortunately! Did you get some pizza while you were here?

Well that's good, that you aren't offended that is.

I never noticed this in Canada - which is not to say there was never a remembrance day sale, I just don't remember one - i'm only talking about Calgary of course.

Not sure I ever noticed "Remembrance Day" sales either. Maybe I just didn't read the flyers. I know that here in town they do a parade, and a service, and a time of silence at 11:00 a.m. Actually, there are now very few vets here. I often wonder what will happen when there are no more....

Unfortunately, Canada continues to accumulate new veterans, and new fallen heroes.

Have you heard of the "Highway of Heroes", in which Canadians line the route from Trenton AFB to Toronto, to greet the returned fallen from the war in Afghanistan? It's become a very touching modern tradition.

Canadians line the overpasses and roadway along the 401:

Here is an arriving casket at Trenton:

I think it's typical for stores to exploit any holiday, just for advertising purposes and draw in more customers. It doesn't matter if said holiday has nothing to do with furniture, etc. it's just a marketing ploy.

Or companies in general. Look at the commercialization Hallmark's done to holidays like Christmas, Easter, Halloween and Valentine's Day. It's rare for a holiday to keep its original meaning nowadays. It's all about selling something or another.

What is the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?

Memorial Day is to remember those who have served and have since passed on to the great military in the sky.

Veteran's Day is to remember those who have served/who are serving and are still alive today.

Yeap, one's for dead, one's for the living.

What kinda bugs me (and my husband if he's being honest about it) is most of the time it is for "veterans of foreign wars" only for when war was actually declared.

Doesn't make his friends any less dead just because they happened to serve during a non-war but still got shot at and blown up. :(

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Yeah, but it wasn't all that fantastic :( Oh well, next time. We are actually considering moving back to CT (I'm looking for a job), so maybe I will get to have yummy pizza whenever I want!!!

This could just be an Indiana thing, but in our family (and several others I know), Memorial Day is a day you also remember those who were close to you that have died, not just veterans. While I lived at home years ago, we always went to both cemetaries that my grandfathers were buried in, cleaned up their gravesites and put flowers out. My mother asked me to go with her this year to put flowers out on all of my grandparents sites, but I went to Canada. I do find that this is a fading trend though as it seems to be most popular with older generations.
