Yes, I have my 2 yr GC. Going to refrain from driving till I get my California licence. We only have one car and it's under my husband's name with California plates (by the way, they call it tag - not plate - here). My Canadian license is valid till 2010.

Thanks, everyone!

Will post an update to let you know getting a CA DL procedures, and if you need to take the road test in San Francisco.

Who does? Most call the license plate a plate, and the little stickers that denote the month and year that your registration expires the tag ;)

They call a plate a tag here too. When I was getting my car imported, the place called to say "your tag is ready for pick up" and it's called "Hendrix Auto Tags". I just notice everyone says tag instead of license plate

I did that too. I had passed my test got a paper permit and had to leave that day. So I left and then never got around to going back to get the actual card. By the time I went back to get the card, I had to take the test again because my paper permit was only good for 30 days... it was just a written test so it was no biggie but still a pain. Anyways, I am very lucky I never got pulled over or anything.

I drove around for a good year with my Canadian DL... and it was only my beginners. Yea not too proud of myself but you're not alone.

I only decided to go back and get the card because my insurance said that my rates would go up if I couldnt produce a NJ license. So I produced one the next day.

Donne moi une poptart!

You are definitely not alone. I pulled some shady stuff myself.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you...I've been here for a year and a half now, and still have my BC driver's license. Here comes the part you're not going to like: They will make you do a driver's test.

I was told over the phone I wouldn't have to, but when I went to do the written test, the supervisor informed me anyone from out of country has to do a driver's test.

Ugh

Apparently it's only about 20 min long though, so that at least limits the amount of time I have to drive down the wrong side of the road or something equally terrifying.

Good luck!

Hey, glad I came back to see if anyone replied after my last post!

Misty1979 - I assume you did your test in Los Angeles? Was the road test in your own car? Do I have to bring my own car then? I was thinking of having my husband drop me off then pick me up afterward. Guess I should be driving there? So, drive there without a valid license, is that what the DMV wants!

I assume they'd want you to get there with an automobile, without having driven it there yourself :P

Yes, written and road test in Cali. I went and pickd up the book at the DMV today. I won't be here until July if all goes well but I thought I should have some reading material for on the plane.

Good luck with all the tests - we are all routing for you. I haven't taken a road test since I was 17 in NJ so 35 years between tests yikes!!

Just wanted to add that license plates are called tags here in Georgia too - and they are not referring to the stickers that you place on the 'tags' when you renew your registration each year :D . You get your (plates) at the 'tag' office.

I haven't actually done my test yet, I'm doing mine on the 12th in a government vehicle (mine won't pass their standards, lol.) They don't have cars there for you to use, so you'll need to bring your own..which I guess means your husband will have to wait while you do the test, but a little extra moral support can't hurt! I would call ahead, if I were you and just make sure you know exactly what sort of documentation you'll need, I know they require vehicle registration, insurance info, etc, but there might be more you'll need to bring.

Keep us updated on how your test goes!
