TRAVELING TO CANADA

Hi my name is Kerri and I am flying back home for the first time with a green card.

Is ther anything special I need to do?

Do they have to stamp my passport before I leave the USA?

Do I have to show my passport & my green card?

I am a bit of a nervous traveler and just want to be prepared and ensure they will let me back in.

Nothing to be nervous about, just show your passport and green card and that's it. They might or might not stamp your passport when entering Canada.

It's really simple actually. Just go up to the customs guard, show your passport and green card and say "Canadian on a Green Card"...

I've never shown my green card to the Canadians.. I show my CDN passport on the way into Canada and the GC on the way into the US.. totally easy..

Same as Emanicipation - the Cdn guys don't care about the GC and the US guys only care about the GC - easiest entries I've had since gettign the GC.

I tell the Cdn side that I'm coming to visit relatives at x address and whatever I'm bringing in with me (ie gifts) and that's it.

So once you have your GC US customs doesn't care to see your passport any longer? That's good to know, I'm going home in a few weeks for the first time with my GC as well.

What I think the logic is.. the GC is a US issued card that carries the scrutiny & background info done by the Dept. of Homeland so it's probably considered more "legitimate" by the US officials than any passport ever would be. Plus it is the proof of your legal status here in the US. They never ask to see my CDN passport, just the GC.

Thanks everyone for the help, I was a bit scared. There are really no customs at the Harrisburg, PA airport. So I was unsure of the steps. THANKS AGAIN

I always showed my green card when I was on it to the Canadian officials because the times I didn't, I got questioned like I was visiting the US. They'd ask how long I was away etc. It's easier to explain to them that I wasn't visiting the US, but visiting Canada when you show them you have a Green Card.

Then again I had one dumbass who after telling him Canadian on a Green Card and visiting family, he asked how long was I away for. I replied and told him I would be in Canada for 1 week rather then say, well I've been living in the US for x number of years etc...

meh.. I had the border guards look at our plates and tell us we lived in NB.. ummmm yeah we have CT plates.. apparently the reader at the window mistook our CT plates for NB plates? Weird.

I have been asked on more than one occasion to produce both passport and green card, so now I just hand 'em both over and let them pick which one they want to scan.
