I met my fiancee almost three years ago - can we still apply for a K1 visa? on requirement is that I have met her during the last two years or did I get that wrong?

Original quote: “Provided you are a US Citizen, you begin by filing an I-129F, petition for fiance(e) visa. As part of the initial petition process, you will be required to show that you have personally met your fiance(e) within the previous 2 years. It is difficult to obtain an exception to this rule.“

Or does it just mean that I have seen her during the last two years?

I was doing an semester abroad program in the US in 2006. I met my fiancee in October 2006 and I was dating her in the US for a whole year until October 2007. After that I had to go back to Germany to finish up my studies. but we still saw each other every two month for a long time (two or three month) cause we have different school times, so every time I had to go to school my girlfriend had off and she was visiting me or I had off and I was visiting her. In 2008 we saw each other 8 out of 12 months ( I can prove it with boarding tickets and passport stamps). I will finish my school in the end of 2009, so we want to turn in the papers for a K1 visa in order to get married in the US in the beginning in 2010.

I’m I able to apply for a K1 visa?

thanks for the help

you need to have met in person within the last 2 years, so if this is 3 years ago, you will have to meet her again before you can begin to file..

You've understood correctly. You must have personally met face to face within the past two years - that is the requirement.

You may have first met before then - plenty of people met as high school sweethearts years and years ago, and eventually go on to file a K-1.

Good luck, and welcome to VJ!

You last saw your fiancee in 2008; correct? If so, you have met within the past two years. Which means you are able to file.

it doesnt matter when you initially met your so for the first time, the only thing that does is that you have to have met in person within the past 2 years (from time of filing) to be able to file for a k1! from reading your post you last saw each other 2008, you therefor fulfill the requirement and are able to file!

is there a reason why you want to file beginning of 2010? it normally takes 5-8 month to get a k1 for a german citizen, so you could file earlier than anticipated and leave germany right after you finish your studies! just my 2 cents :)

OP plans to file the K1 now in anticipation of a US marriage in 2010. Sounds like a good plan to me

Like the other said, the requirement is that you've personally seen your fiance sometime within the past 2 years not that you've met each other for the first time in the last 2 years. My fiance and I have been together for 4 years and we were approved last week! I think its great you have been together and fighting through such a long distance relationship for so long. Congrats and all the best on your future together :)
