Gathering consular documents - original I-129F package needed?

The guides here say to send your fiance a copy of the original K-1 petition package.

Is this really asked for, or used, by the consulate? It seems redundant to me.

(I have asked this question in the New Zealand forum too, with specific regard to Auckland).

Thanks.

Usually, no. Early on I made it a policy to take with me at every opportunity to meet the lovely USCIS and State Dept. people a copy of any document I ever sent to anyone at any time, all the way through the AOS interview. I never needed them and carried them right back home. I went to the interview and took the entire I-129f package and never opened it. If they need something and it is on the kitchen table 8000 miles away, won't you feel foolish?

In our case, my wife's consulate directed her to bring most of the contents of the 129 package to the interview.

The guides here are meant to give us all the best chance for success. What if something did not make it into your file that was sent from the NVC to (specifically for the OP) Auckland?

Gary's point is right on the money. After all that you go through to get to the interview stage why take a chance on anything?

There have occasionally been cases where something that had been sent in with the I-129f did not make it to the consulate. It is pretty rare but it does happen. As Gary said, wouldn't you feel foolish and want to kick yourself if your fiance did not have it with her. What usually happens, depending on what exactly is missing, is that they will give you a "conditional approval" based on you getting the document to them. This will delay your process by however long it takes you to get it to them PLUS however long it takes the consulate to decide to open your envelope and place it with your application.

Thanks everyone.

I'm not too worried then.

If they specifically ask for it, then I will send it.

The issue is I don't have the original I-129F with me (lawyer has it) and I want to go ahead and FedEx the I-134 and other documents to my fiance in a day or two (before I will have a chance to get the K-1 packet copy from the lawyer).

Our consulate should get the file from NVC in a day and will be expediting our case. I want my fiance to be able to reply to packet 3 a few days from now.

Another good reason your foreign fiance/e should have a copy of the entire package is because the CO might ask him/her a question based on the information in the package. If he/she doesn't know the answer, they could use it as grounds to send the application back to USCIS saying he/she doesn't know material facts about the petitioner.

Remember that the CO is going to judge the accuracy of the answers they get based on the information they have available. If they ask a question based on information in the original petition package, then they'll know if the beneficiary's answer is correct, so the beneficiary should know the correct answer. If they ask a question that isn't contained in any of the information they were given, and can't easily be obtained by their investigators, then the beneficiary will know this, and can answer the question accordingly. For instance, if they ask what is the petitioner's favorite color, this information isn't on any of the documents the CO has in front of them, but it is something they might reasonably expect the beneficiary to know. If the beneficiary answers "I don't know", the CO might conclude they don't know the petitioner very well. On the other hand, the beneficiary could say "blue" or "red", and the CO wouldn't have any idea whether the answer was correct, but would probably be satisfied that the beneficiary had an answer.
