they refused to provide a SS# in her married name but had no probs with her maiden.

So i guess once we get the SS card with her maiden we can go in and apply for a name change ... ?? any ideas?

After you get married you can change it to married name provided with your Marriage Certificate.

we ARE already married that is the whole point of the SSA being silly

Right, but as "pRetTy_aNgeL" says, you need to be married first before they'll issue the SSN in her married name.

Seriously, did they give you a reason for not allowing it? Whoever you were working with is an idiot, but you probably already know that. I even remember seeing a FAQ or something on the Social Security website about all you have to do is show your marriage license or certificate. I can't find it now, but I know I saw it.

It has to be saved in the SAVE system (which is updated through USCIS, not SSA) under her new name before they'll change it. Something to do with the status of how they really identify her and one administration can't do something without the other administration's approval first. Since she's an immigrant, it has to go through DHS before it gets to Treasury. PITA.

We learned the hard way on one of our 14 trips to the SSA office. They'll get you all hooked up in about two weeks. Head back there in two weeks, she should be updated in the SAVE system by then.

I believe you're correct, it's when they process AOS. Once they have her "new name" in the system, SSA will be able to see it on their screen as well. I went through this about two years ago so they may have changed something now, but I wanna say that's how they did it then. I don't know though, with no more waterboarding, who knows how it'll all get done.
