And don't forget the AP and work permit applications (just in case, and they are free). No need to wait for the SSN. We have biometrics scheduled and Vika still doesn't have her SSN. Just bear in mind that once the K-1 expiration date arrives she won't be able to get a SSN until her green card is in hand.

The absurd cost has been justified by "USCIS is completely funded by fees."

I wonder if we charged the welfare folks a portion of their welfare back to pay for it if they'd stay on it for so long?

Absolutely correct (we ran up against this last week). It is 14 days prior to the expiration - not when it arrives.

The guidance I've read is wait two weeks after you first enter the country (for your entrance to get into the system) and then obtain your SSN.

Do a name change later after marriage if so desired.

My wife had an SSN assigned when she came over. Wonder if they're doing it differently now. We waited the two weeks then went to apply and they already had her in the system with the number they assigned her in Moscow. Are they not giving everyone a number anymore?

We marked yes on the docs but she did NOT get one when she came over ... no biggie just seems silly not to issue it in the married name when you have all the documents

What's weird with SSN is no matter what your name is, that number never changes.
